This is a Baltic Porter brewed with whole licorice root and star anise. 7.8% ABV. It is fermented warm with an ale yeast in flagrant disregard of modern style guidelines, instead working towards a heritage pre-lager treatment of the style. Subtle licorice and anise notes are present in the nose. The body is surprisingly light, with licorice sweetness helping to balance a smoky chocolate malt character. There should be clear notes of roasted barley on the finish.

Can. Pours clear deep brown to black with a large brown head that dissipates with some lacing. Aroma is very today, coffee, tobacco, ashtray. Flavor is the same plus anise, lightly sweet, light to medium bitter, light ashy astringence. Interesting, but a bit too anise and cigarette butty for me. BlackIPA where are you?

Can from BrewDog online. It pours very dark brown with a bubbly tan head. The nose is cola, caramel, liquorice, roasted malt, toast and a touch of smoke. The taste is bitter-sweet, roasted malt, pretty big on the liquorice, coffee, cola, decent bitterness, spice, earth and a touch of alcohol warmth in the background. Finish is bitter-sweet. Medium body and pretty harsh, fizzy carbonation. Not particularly complex, but tasty nonetheless. Carbonation does spoil it slightly however...

Can. Pours pitch black with a light tan head that quiockly disappears. initial aromas have some german whaeat charactistics some banana phenols. These fade somewhat. Also a little alcohol heat in the nose. Flavour is rich, but in my view the roasted malt do not play well with the star amise. Dry finish which lingers.

250ml draught at Gaasa. Black as pitch, almost. Fawn-coloured head leaving spotty lacing. Smell of semi-sweet malts. Dark fruity and salty liquorice in flavour with notes of spiced berries. Bittersweet ending. Fine bodied. Likable (Oslo, 19.09.2012).

16 oz can. Pours black with red tints. Medium head of big tan bubbles that dissipates very quickly. Aromas of sweet chocolate and roasted malts with a hint of dark fruit. Flavors of black coffee, dark chocolate powder, and burnt malts. Maybe a little licorice. Fizzy. Very nice.
