This is a Baltic Porter brewed with whole licorice root and star anise. 7.8% ABV. It is fermented warm with an ale yeast in flagrant disregard of modern style guidelines, instead working towards a heritage pre-lager treatment of the style. Subtle licorice and anise notes are present in the nose. The body is surprisingly light, with licorice sweetness helping to balance a smoky chocolate malt character. There should be clear notes of roasted barley on the finish.

Can, 12C. Black with a tan head that’s a coat very quickly and then is gone. Aroma of treacle, mocha, grass, aniseed. Oily, lightly carbonated mouthfeel. Sweet with dark sugars, moderate roasted flavours, licorice, creeping bitterness. Pepper and anise linger a little long after the malt and licorice fade away. Would have liked a little more bitterness at the end, too. First sip seemed a bit thin, but it gradually filled out.

Enjoyed at a friends place while bottling some home brew. Not a fan of this stuff. Appearance pitch black with almost no head. Aroma of chocolate, light booze, bit of spice/cinnamon. Taste is ok, features all of the aroma elements, doesn’t really add anything, below average when comparing against other of the style.

Can, from Firefly, Vancouver
Black color, with a short lived brownish head. Gentle aroma of roasted malts, some chocolate, light liquorice. Good body strength; roasted malt and dark caramel flavor, chocolate, with some liquorice; correct bitterness.
Nothing surprising.

Location: 16 oz can from Buy Rite, 6/29/12
Aroma: The aroma is fairly subtle for the style, with roasted malts, chocolate, and nutty notes
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with a thin light brown head and light lace-work
Flavor: Tastes lightly sweet and mid-heavy roasty up-front, with some later dry roast, and a little tartness
Palate: The body is medium (though it feels light for the style), with average carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a pretty interesting beer. The nose is a touch on the subtle side, but ultimately the components that are hinted at in the nose are basically the same ones that shine through in the flavor. The tartness though, I only found in the flavor. Overall, I found some things to like, and some things that I didn't like quite as much, but it really is a pretty solid beer.

Sampled from a 16 oz can this beer poured a black color with an enormous foamy dark brown head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was port wine, anise, cherry cola and cracker. The flavor was bitter and roasty with moderate chocolate, coffee, port wine, cherry cola and anise. Long bitter, dryish and roasty finish with lingering cocoa, coffee and port wine. Medium body. Solid.
