A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.
Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Gylden brun klar med fingerhøyt beige skum. Lukter masse humle, plommer, fersken og noe karamell. Middels fylde. Kraftig humlebitter, druesten og sitrusskall. Bitterheten øker på og er på topp rett etter svelging.

(Bottle) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, hoppy nose with citrus peel, grapefruit, a touch of resin, dried pineapple and mango, crisp-bread, caramel, honey, peaches, apricots and lots of fresh citric hops. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of pink grapefruit, resin, orange peel, dried fruit, crisp-bread, caramel, honey and a generous, fresh citric bitterness in the finish. Quite bitter, with a slight touch of alcohol. More than medium body, fairly sweet. A bit one-dimensional, but really tasty with an impressive hop presence. Very nice.

Poured into a taster showing moderate filtration and dark amber with sparse white foam. The nose shows sweet creamy malts The palate is lightly carbonated and very thick bodied almost to the point of syrup. Not sure if I got an off bottle, but a lot of sweet caramel malts on the start and a sharp IPA bitterness that is heavily tamed by the malty sweetness. Given it’s 100 IBU’s you can definitely taste it on the finish but a lot more malt than I enjoy.

Big hop aroma on this beer, both from the bottle and from the class, I could smell it from two feet away. It looks good, copper color, thick head. Flavor is a blend of hops and sweet malt, which takes away from the hops somewhat. I am not sure this was the best hop combination for this beer, I found it to get dry and herbal about half way through. Still, very good. It is one of the most hop-intense beers I have had in a long time.
