On cask at Main Street, pours a deep dark brown with almost no head. Nose brings out licorice, unsweetened cocoa and lots of roasted malt for a porter. Flavour is even more pronounced on the roasted malt, almost to a burnt degree, with licorice and unsweetened cocoa to a lesser degree. Too burnt and licoricey for my taste, but it's pretty decent. Okay.

Draught at the brewpub, on June 18, 2015As a cask/real ale, only mentioned "1886 Porter".Clear black color, tan head. Sweet, malty taste. Grainy, bitter aftertaste, also light roasted. Thin mouthfeel, medium high dry bitterness. Minty malty scent.

Cask at the brewery
Black color with small beige head. Mild nose of cardboard and roasted malt, light fruity esters from the yeast. Smooth mouthfeel, with low carbonation, but served not too warm; the flavor is monotonic, too much roasted malt and too little chocolate or malt depth, moderately sweet, some liquorice; strong bitterness; high yeast presence, which means metallic and astringent final.
I was not around in 1886 to say if this beer tastes as it used to be, but as is, it’s just an ok beer that doesn’t stand out.
If it’s a replica of a historical recipe, I appreciate the experience.
