A collaboration between Bret & Eric Kuhnhenn and Erik Harms of Dragonmead, this beer truly defies categorization. This beer is not for the hopheads - this is an intense malt-bomb. Heathen starts off similar to a traditional German Doppelbock, then goes to 11... 12.5 actually. Rich malt notes persist with flavors and aromas reminiscent of candied fruits, Christmastime spices, and a touch of smokiness. Very little bitterness throughout with flavors that persist long after the swallow. If Doppelbock was known as "liquid bread," this Triple Bock is more like "Liquid Sandwich."

12 fl oz bottle. Pours clear and golden amber with a small tan head. Aroma is smooth toasted malty and light wineous. Thick overripe fruity to wneous. Dense roasted malty and caramelish. Light bitter and smooth caramelish lingering finish.

355 ml bottle bought @ Ølbutikken. Pours very dark reddish brown with a small brownish white head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with sweet dark bread, prunes, raisins, alcohol, liquorice root, figs, vanilla fudge, milk chocolate, wood, dark honey, burnt caramel, toffee, orange zest, mushrooms and hints of burnt sugar and dates. Taste is sweet and tiny sour with burnt caramel, sweet dark bread, dates, figs, prunes, raisins, alcohol, red wine, wood, liquorice fudge, vanilla, dark honey, cocoa and very subtle hints of metal. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet, tiny tart, tiny boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and tiny sour with dried fruits, sweet dark bread, red wine and alcohol.

Bottle shared at Beer Temple. Pours clear red/brown with no head. Aroma of maltand sweet over ripe fruit. Flavour is sweet, raisins, over ripe fruit, caramel and malt. Thick full body and low carbonation.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of arminjewell. Another nice choice- thanks Armin! JetsonFest II. Reddish brown appearance with no head. Incredibly sweet, thick caramel, very intense molasses, a bit dark fruity aroma. The flavor doesn’t have that sickly sweetness of the aroma. Big caramel/molasses, banana/fruity, a touch burnt malty, rich flavor without being overly sweet. The booze doesn’t come through in the flavor as you might expect. Not anything like you’re typical German Doppelbock but this one was quite nice.

Bottle shared by Steve. Pours dark brown with tan head. Nose/taste of cherry cough medicine (stronger in nose), caramel, chocolate breads, toffee and toasted malts. Warming alcohol in finish. Full mouth feel.

Bottle. Pours a dark ruby amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy caramel and dark fruit aroma. Sweetish malty spicy caramel and dark fruit flavor. Has a sweetish malty spicy caramel finish.

2006 vintage. 12 oz. bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany), pours a very murky dark mahogany with a thin tan head and heaps of sediment. Aroma is very sweet, with red berries, maple syrup, candied sugar and brandy. Flavour is sweet and sour - seems the age has killed this a bit, though I can't say it's offensive - with berries, candied sugar, liqueur-coated dark fruits, sour fruits, and alcohol, though worked in very well. Given that I see no other reviews with sour notes, I'll assume this has gone off or slightly infected, though as mentioned, it's not too bad - the alcohol appears to have become more hidden and the sweetness is not cloying. Complex, but obviously lost some of its prime flavours.

Bottle from Half Time. Pours dark ruddy amber/brown with no head. Aroma is very brown sugar/ roasted heavy malt. there’s a light medicinal aspect. Full bodied, almost. Sam Adams TB minus the maple, perhaps. A little cola and brown sugar for flavor. Not quit dryish. Difficult to describe. Very, very nice.

Sample at the brewpub. Dark amber pour with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of caramel, malt and hops. Rich body with flavors of resiny hops, caramel malt and dark fruits. The finish is dark malts and fruits. Good beer overall.

Bottle thanks to Sean! Poured hazy amber with small gray head that laced nicely. Aroma showed clear infection (Kuhnhenn... what do you know) with sour notes combining with the sweet grain notes. Flavor begins sour and has a bit of a sweet finish. This was actually an infection I enjoyed.
