What does it mean? Yes, what indeed does it all mean. Meaning of course is elusive and illusive. It can’t or shouldn’t be found on this bottle. Should it? Yet what if it was? Would you begin to look for pearls of wisdom or life direction on a beer label? Perhaps it’s been there all along. Since meaning is a mere illusion, perhaps we shouldn’t let it have any influence on our destiny. This particular beer refused to succumb to the illusion of meaning or allow capricious parameters to have any influence on its own fermented fate. Are we even asking the right question? Are you feeling frustrated in the emptiness? If so, that could be because someone got to this beer before you, and thus there’s a reason for that emptiness. It’s empty. And if so, perhaps there indeed is not any meaning for you here after all.

12oz bottle @Pauls Gathering-pours a tan head and black with red tint color. Aroma is pine hops, dark malt. Taste is pine, sweet dark malt-licorice, dark fruit. OK effervescence.

The color is almost black. The aroma mixes roasted malt and alpine cheese. Good chocolate flavor, good body, roasted malts; strong bitterness. Not much complexity, but good balance and power.

Pours black with brown highlights and a diminishing tan head.Nose shows lots of American grapefruit hops before the powerful dark malt comes along with espresso and dark chocolate. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t find any candi sugar or any other Belgian aspect. Mostly just dark malt.The flavours however, are pretty crazy. First up is some grapefruit, nectarine and orange hoppy notes mixed in with sweet confectionery-like candi sugar, before massive amounts of roasted coffee and bitter cocoa steamroll along the palate, contributing to a very long-lasting complex bitter finish. Wow.Pretty full body which matches the robust dark malt well, but I think the carbonation could be a bit lower to really let that candi sugar shine.

Draught at White Horse Old Ale fest 2009. Black pour with slight beige head. Roasty, chocolate, citrus, pine, slightly bitter taste. Unbalanced to me, very strange, typical Brewdog.

Bottle @ Hj Hansen, Odense. Pours black with a small creamy beige head and handsome lacings. Nose is mildly roasted and have notes of chocolate, coffee and fresh hops in the back. Full and smooth palate. Dry roasted flavor with coffee and citrussy and piney hops and vague notes of ashes and cold coffee. Very tasty. Ends dry and bitter.

Black brown color, small off-white head. Some chocolate, bourbon and wood in the nose. Quite hoppy, some caramel, cough syrup, bourbon and alcohol in the flavor. Long bitter-roasted aftertaste. Interesting beer.

Definitely a melding of styles. Pours a translucent, black with a thin tan head. Looks like a schwarzbier. Aroma smells like a mild porter. Sweet, toasty, coffee, etc. Flavor is completely different: hops citrus, pine. Finish is sweet, a little watery. Weird.

Slightly cloudy deep copper color with a wafer thin light tan head and a decent amount of lacing. Aroma of Chivas Regal, hints of scotch and oak. Flavor begins with almond and hints of chocolate, a slight edge of hoppy bitterness, and then finishes much more on the sour side. Interesting and complex.

Bottle from cgarvieuk, thanks Craig! Deep dark brown color, almost opague. Chocolate, blackcurrant and raisin in the aroma. Malty flavor with dark chocolate, twigs, raisin, figs and blackcurrant. Roastbitter aftertaste with tannines and dreid fruit. Good!
