Imperial Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels with Vanilla

Behold, our original barrel-aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout, Deth’s Tar, with hand-split whole vanilla beans, and “vanilla toasted” French oak. Flaked and malted oats establish a supremely silky body that belies the beer’s considerable strength. Pronounced vanilla flavor and aroma blends harmoniously with chocolaty caramel maltiness and oak. Enjoy now or store cold.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a frigid January afternoon prior to watching football all day, very cozy. Appearance is pitch black with motor oil consistency and a light off-white head. Aroma is a great mix of rich vanilla, chocolate, and light bourbon. Taste is phenomenal, oak comes out a bit more and the vanilla addition is welcomed. Very good stuff.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a pitch black with a full finger of brown head that dissipates. Big chewy malt aromas with vanilla, bourbon and oak. Viscous body with creamy vanilla, oak and more bourbon on the palate. Loads of chocolate with a nice bitter note on the finish. Great beer first adjuncted imperial stout. No pastry here.

12 oz. can, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is intense, with lots of vanilla, medium roast, booze, and oats. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of oats, bourbon, medium roast, booze, and a hint of vanilla. Lots of oats, booze, and a bit of cocoa on the finish. Boozy and warming. Very good.

16 ounce prowler into snifter, filled on 11/9/2019. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense and rocky tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, cream, toffee, molasses, bourbon, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Mild booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, vanilla, bourbon barrels, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, cream, toffee, molasses, bourbon, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Mild herbal, grassy, roast, charred bitterness; and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, cream, toffee, molasses, bourbon, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, dark bread/crust, coconut, licorice, dark fruit, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, vanilla, bourbon barrels, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; with no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Mild increasing warmth of 14.8%, with minimal lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is an amazing barrel aged flavored Russian imperial stout. All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, vanilla, bourbon barrels, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV, with the mildly bitter/charred/tannic/drying finish. Perfectly balanced between rich malts, vanilla, and bourbon barrel presence/integration; with mild fruity yeast and earthy hops. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example as expected. Definitely better than the base beer, as with the coffee version. Less bitter/charred/drying overall. Never overpowering, drying, or boozy.
