Amber in colour, which after all is the traditional appearance of historical white beers, it has a higher volume of alcohol (6%) than the white beers we are familiar with. Having been created locally (1991), this white beer has long since burst out beyond the banks of the Grande and Petite Honnelle rivers whose name it proudly bears. Yet, Blanche des Honnelles steers clear of the well-trodden paths taken by some beers. Its taste is surprising and in no way comparable to the other beverages of the same type that are currently on the market. While relatively discreet on the nose, its initial flavour yields to an intensely dry bitterness on a peppery background. There is no acidity in this three-cereal white beer (barley, wheat, oats). Its taste is invigorating.
In 2019 the new 1979 label was introduced to commemorate the 40th jubilee of the brewery.

Sample at En Öl- & Whiskymässa, Gothenburg, 2015, april. Hazy yellow, small white head, dissipating quickly leaving a small lid on the surface. Aroma is gently mild citrus, leaves, corianders, dust, yeast. Taste is creamy and floral fruity, citrus, orange, yeast hints, dry finish. Round, light to medium bosy, medium carbo. A well balanced, tasty and round wit with well hidden alcohol.

Bottle at home in London - sourced from THE BeerMerchants. Pours unclear gold with a creamy white head. Sugary and meaty wheat in the nose, faint fusel notes, some flowers, ripe orange. Medium sweet flavor with some doughy wheat bread, minimal bitterness, some yeast, tangerine, bubblegum. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes sweet, relatively simple, with more doughy wheat bread, light cereal, Belgian yeast, candi sugar, white grape, mild citrus. Decent.

Bottle. Cloudy dark golden with white head. Sweet fruits with apricot and peach, lemon, herbs, fresh bread. Sweet at first with a very light sourness and light bitter finish. Nice velvety feel. Pleasantly surprised!

Classic Wallonian since 1991. Brewed with additional oats and, very atypically, not spiced. Yellowish white, thick moussy foam, deep golden colour with orange hue, clear but cloudy after adding the deposit. Appealing malty and grainy aroma with a nice balance between barley and wheat, hints of apple, flowers, white wine, bananas, bread. Taste begins like a classic witbier, sourish wheat nicely balanced with sweetish barley, silky mouthfeel thanks to the oats, then becoming dryer with more (albeit aromatic) hop bitterness in the finish than expected for the style, as well as a bit of warming alcohol. Very nice beer, one of my favorites in the style, but far from a stereotypical Hoegaarden-clone - which in this case is a good thing.

Bottle from Piccolo Parco in Taipei. Bigger and better than a usual wit but still the same notes. Musty aroma. Crisp taste with lots of effervescence. Very dry.
