A blend of a mature and young ale creates a porter of traditional character that’s dark cherry in colour and complex in taste. Aromas of liquorice, rum, raisin and chocolate with hints of coffee are in abundance in this full-bodied, warming ale.

Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Appearance - very close to opaque black but with red chinks. Off white, almost fawn head. Nose - caramel and honeycomb. Chocolate and shortbread. Taste - general feeling of caramel shortbread, with now a smoky edge. Palate - medium bodied, crunchy texture. Dry, crunchy finish. Overall - enjoyed this one.

Tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours black with very fine brown foam. Aroma is coffee, licorice, molasses. Body is kind of on the thin side, with limited carbonation. Taste is medium sweet, with moderate bitterness/roastiness. Final is average.

Coffee, licorice and brown sugar in both aroma and flavor. Sweetish, medium bodied. Bitter walnut aftertaste. Tasty, but the licorice character is somewhat exaggerated. Nevertheless a fine beer.

Pours dark brown, almost pitch black, topped with a tiny beige head, not so lasting. Gentler malty nose, some chocolate and a tad roasty. Medium bitterness with medium rossty feel. Medium aftertaste, a bit roasty. Medium lighter body. Ok drinkable.

Keg at the Old Jerusalem. It looked great in the glass, but was somewhat lacking in the flavour department! It was as smooth as a smooth thing on a particularly smooth day, but underwhelming.
