This decadent Chocolate Abbey Ale is a lovely trifle for your senses. Brewed with a proprietary Belgian yeast and English Maris Otter Malt it is smooth and rich. Inspired by a recent tour of Europe and brewed with chocolate we enjoyed there. Subtle Segal Ranch hops promote the rich dark chocolate flavors of this rather strong Dubbel. Best served at 48 °F. An elegant excuse to linger after dinner.

Bottle @ home. Clear, dark brown appearance with a light brown head. Rich baker’s cocoa, dark cherry, big, tangy red fruity, belgian yeasty, sweet malty flavor. Bittersweet, chocolate, rich fruity, cherry, plum, fig, dark candy sugar, caramel, chocolate malty flavor. A lot going on but I’m not a huge fan.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber brown with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a rich chocolate note with backing dark grains and just a bit of stone fruit underlying. Flavor begins with dark grains and a hint of red fruit but finishes with strong chocolate that is slightly sweet.

Bottle thanks to Tripplebrew, thanks Katie! Used a snifter. Thin tan head, light retention. Big chocolate aroma. Some may call me crazy but, it has a Tootsie Roll flavor. I feel as if I’m drinking that candy! When the brew warms it changes a bit. The Belgian yeast comes through more. Fruity yeast esters come a tad bit in, BUT the coca / chocolate dominates well through the finish. Has a spice hiding in the background. Very interesting and well worth a try.

Bottle courtesy of cbfobes. Thanks! Pours a dark brown color with a large pillowy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of cocoa, chocolate, toasted notes, floral/perfume notes and a faint bit of citrus. The taste is cocoa, banana, caramel, chocolate, leafy hops, spice. Medium bodied. Not bad, but it’d be nice if the chocolate was dialed back a bit.

Bottle. Deep translucent red-brown body, thin off-white head. Nose of chocolate wafers or chocolate liqueur with some tart tannic character. Tannic, somewhat tart body dominated by chocolate wafers/liqueur, in addition to clove and hints of pepper. Not bad, but lacks nuance.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a trappist glass. Pours translucent dark brown with crimson highlights and half inch beige head. Good lacing, medium body, small bubble texture, and chocolate/tootsie roll aroma. Taste is complex malty chocolate, some dark fruit, and a hint of smoke.

12oz bottle. Unfiltered amber-brown, big thick beige head. Sweet amber-chocolate aroma, maybe a hint of red wine? Quite choco-forward, this is an interesting variation of a Dubbel. Unique, but could also hang with some Trappist and Abbey Ales, sans the Belgian effervescence. I like the interplay between the in your face chocolate and the Belgian yeast. Well balanced by some light, spicy hops. Some chocolate cherry notes in the finish. Unique, cool beer. I cant drink more than one of these..it was brutal to drink a pint of it..new overall...
