Collaboration ale between The Lost Abbey and New Belgium Brewing.

A long time ago (well, 2004), Pizza Port’s (Solana Beach, CA) Tomme Arthur and New Belgium’s Peter Bouckaert brewed an all Brettanomyces beer they called Mo’ Betta Bretta. In 2012, the two joined forces once again — this time at The Lost Abbey — to re-release this funky ale.

On the Imagination River…live some very curious Bullfrogs. Rumor has it they LOVE funky and wild beer. But it wasn’t always this way. Like most beer drinking frogs, they started out drinking mass produced beer. And for the most part, each was content drinking this beer. But then a new frog took up residence next door. He embraced funk and his inner wild child.

One day, while lounging on the lily pads, he broke out a special bottle of Mo Betta Bretta, a delicious blonde ale with a decidedly 100% wild fermentation carried out by Brettanomyces. Everything changed that day. Now when you get close to the reeds and listen, you can hear them croaking in unison…Mo Betta Bretta. And for that, we’re thankful these frogs have great taste in beer.

Smaller corked bottle thanks to Kyle. Pours a cloudy orange color with a medium white head. A big spicy and peppery nose, light funk. The overall flavor is a bit like a more peppery and light banana Belgian ale, not sour at all, light funkiness in the finish. A nice palate.

Small, rather stable very fine & dense yellow head, fed by extremely lively Champenoise carbonation in copperish-yellow beer. Typical Brett nose, old furniture or old textiles, farmyard more or less; garden herbs or dried herbs. Sweetish, with a spicy-sourish finish. Again dried herbs, dried fruits, dried vegetables. Definitely some oxydation. Leathersoap is there a bit as well. Very carbonated, spritzy MF; certain slickness, lean body. MBB wasn’t my favourite @ PizzaPort, is isn’t my favourite @ Lost Abbey. Somewhere, the Bretts don’t deliver the right thing - bit like the Ommageddon.

Super hazy golden coloured body with a bit of an orange and slight amber glow and a thin, one centimetre tall white head. Aroma of yeast, coriander seed, corn, curacao and a bit of light caster sugar. Medium-bodied; Assertive yeast and hay/grassy flavours with a lot of effervescence at first then fading to an almost creamy, grassy and herbal flavour and a bit of nice sweet complexity on the back end. Aftertaste has some corn tastes, a bit of curacao and full oranges, some lemons, a bunch of yeast and a little coriander seed freshness. Overall, a decent beer bordering more on a biere de garde more than anything else, but not amazing, and not as good as I was even expecting. I sampled this 37.5 cL split bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 22-July-2012 for US$8.25 sampled at home in Washington on 19-October-2012, with this bottle made on 24-May (perhaps, it’s tough to read).

Bottle. Pours a clear amber gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grains with a some earthy funk and a hint of light fruits. Flavor is quite sweet with grains, fruits and flora with just a bit of funk coming out towards the finish.

Pours clear gold into a snifter. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes to coat surface. Sweet caramel and coriander aromas. Sweet with toasted caramel and hay upfront turning to ever so mild brett in the lasting slightly salty finish.

Enjoyed in an Ommegang glass at cellar temp.

A - Poured a very hazy / cloudy dark orange with a finger head that dissipated pretty fast.

S - Very grazzy on the nose. Hint of citrus and floral notes. Nice dry bretty scent and citrus.

T - Sour tangerine taste. Very funky and grassy. Very crisp and sort of a lemon/lime finish but it’s very faint. Very tasty.

M - Medium carbonation, medium body. crisp and dry finish.

O - This is a nice drinkable beer.

375ml bottle from a trade, thanks stawn!

Bottled 06/23/12 - Pours clear yellowish orange with a small foamy head. Aroma of earthy farmhouse notes, biscuity malts, yeast, hints of tart fruits and yeast. Taste has a lot of farmhouse notes, hints of yeast, tart fruits and biscuity malts. Finish is sweetish and slightly fruity with some hints of apricose and spices. Quite sweetish and malty Belgian tripel, not really that sour or tart. Where’s the bretta?
