Collaboration ale between The Lost Abbey and New Belgium Brewing.

A long time ago (well, 2004), Pizza Port’s (Solana Beach, CA) Tomme Arthur and New Belgium’s Peter Bouckaert brewed an all Brettanomyces beer they called Mo’ Betta Bretta. In 2012, the two joined forces once again — this time at The Lost Abbey — to re-release this funky ale.

On the Imagination River…live some very curious Bullfrogs. Rumor has it they LOVE funky and wild beer. But it wasn’t always this way. Like most beer drinking frogs, they started out drinking mass produced beer. And for the most part, each was content drinking this beer. But then a new frog took up residence next door. He embraced funk and his inner wild child.

One day, while lounging on the lily pads, he broke out a special bottle of Mo Betta Bretta, a delicious blonde ale with a decidedly 100% wild fermentation carried out by Brettanomyces. Everything changed that day. Now when you get close to the reeds and listen, you can hear them croaking in unison…Mo Betta Bretta. And for that, we’re thankful these frogs have great taste in beer.

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of funky yeast is sourer then I would have anticipated. Taste is a mix between some sweet malt notes with some funky ester and light barnyard notes and a sour finish. Boyd is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting but a bit underwhelmed and not sure this is one I would revisit anytime soon.

12.7 oz corked and caged bottle. Pours cloudy cantaloupe with a thin white head. Aroma consists of doughy bread, brett, dusty old books, tart berries, lemon rind--could be more prominent. Taste is lightly sweet, lightly tart, meaty. Tastes more like a straight Belgian golden ale than anything; the brett is there, but there’s not much of it; has a clove flavor. It’s good, but not what I was expecting or hoping for. Next up: New Belgium’s version of the same beer.

Bottle @ home. Pours a cloudy, light yellow orange appearance with an off white head. Bready, grassy, a touch funky, light herbal, passionfruity, straw aroma. Tangy, somewhat chewy, straw/hay, grassy, mild tropical fruity, lemon, light coconut flavor. Kind of boring that isn’t offensive but also not all that enjoyable either. Really uninspired and bland. Wouldn’t recommend to friends.

Draught at Lost Abbey. Glowing, cloudy orange-gold with lace. Very estery nose, clove and banana. Sweet flavor, stewed peaches, light hay. Not much brett flavors going on, just estery. Rich wiezen-like flavors. Needs ages, I guess.

Bottle. Pours cloudy apricot gold with bone white head. Nose/taste of pineapple, yeast, spice, straw, light malt and citrus zest. Medium body. Finishes slightly dry. Brett is more pineapple/saison than sour funk. Nice drinking summertime beer.

Sampled on tap at PIB, pours a cloudy yellow with a small white head. Aroma of light brett, horse blanket and some citrus zest. Flavour of light brett, yeast, and light citrus zest. Very smooth and well-refined, but missing something to make it stand out. Not a huge brett-bomb. Very good, but not mind-blowing like so many Lost Abbey beers.

Draught @ Hawthorne Hophouse. Rated on 11.07.2012
Aroma has lots of citrus and hints of hay. Flavour is weird and tart with citrus and hints of biscuits. The bretta is definitely present here, but not in the usual way.
