The Abstrakt series continues to tantalise your taste buds with the latest member of the family, AB:11.
AB:11 is an imperial black barley wine brewed with ginger, black raspberries and chipotle peppers. A 12.8% rollercoaster of ginger zestiness, chipotle smokiness all bound together with dark berry tartness and the decadent residual body of a black barley wine.
Like all Abstrakt beers, AB:11 pushes the boundaries and challenges the perception of what beer is and what it can be. Brewed only once, AB:11 is excellent for drinking now, but also designed to be cellared for future enjoyment.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours reddish black with a small blackish beige head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and spicy with biscuits, ginger ale, alcohol, raspberry jam, hay, black pepper corns, roasted malts and hints of bitter chocolate, honey and smoke. Taste is sweet and spicy with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, ginger, cardamon, black pepper corns, cloves, biscuits, caramel, hay, smoke, charred wood and hints of raspberry jam. Mouthfeel is round, cloying, sticky sweet, spicy astringent and medium bodied. Finish is sweet, tiny bitter and spicy with roasted malts, ginger snaps, raspberry jam, caramel, bitter chocolate and smoke. A terrible mix drenched in ginger. Doesn’t work out at all...

Draft at BrewDog, Shepherd’s Bush on 7 December 2013. Poured black with a dense tan head. Powerful aroma of dark fruit, stem ginger and alcohol. Boozy dark cake flavour with prunes, liquorice and bitter roasted malt to balance. Finish was burnt toast, oak and molasses with warming alcohol. Top barley wine.

Bottle - Dates, ginger, light berry and pepper. Jet black with a thin brown head. Sweet molasses, dark berry, ginger and a bit of pepper. Roller coaster of flavor is correct, sweet and spicy with no bitterness. Even with all the crazy flavors, it is interesting vs. disjointed and although I wouldn’t drink another I did enjoy this one.

At the first Kinki Beer Tasting, bottle 8604 of 9819. One of the four we tried(01 02, 10, 11). This black barley wine poured a reddish dark brown almost purplish. The aroma was chili peppers & cherry cough syrup. After I said that everyone got annoyed with me for putting that taste in their minds... medium bodied with a sweet, earthy, cherry cough syrup with a dash of ginger but kind of boozy. Syrupy & a bit musty, this was my least favorite of the bunch.

Bottle, # 5300. Pours dark red with a finger thick mocha head. Aroma is very nice with caramel malts, chocolate and some grainy whiffs. Creamy body with almost no carbonation at all. Flavour is sweet with sugar, prunes and dark fruit, as well as chocolate, coffee and muscovado giving a sweet and balanced finish.

Bottle at an Appellation Wines tasting, some time ago, but I’ve been catching up slowly. The girl next to me said, "This smells like something I would wash my hair with". A big, interesting beer, but too much ginger. Will re-rate when I crack open my own bottle.

bottle from ølbutikken. Very dark brown, smooth brown head. Quite unusual for a BW, but looks super nice.intense stingy phenolic and alcoholic (as in pure alcohol) aroma. under that, some undefined herbal notes, roasted malts, stinging nettles (could be the pepper). aroma is sort of like a schorchbrau, or one of those brewdog ice distilled beers. Flavor is toffee, herbal notes, peppery note, chocolate, somewhat tasty, but not very barley wineish, alc. works real well though, and the overall impression is a great complex new age punk sipper, whatever that might be. No, I didn’t really like this one - but I liked the experience ;-)
