The Abstrakt series continues to tantalise your taste buds with the latest member of the family, AB:11.
AB:11 is an imperial black barley wine brewed with ginger, black raspberries and chipotle peppers. A 12.8% rollercoaster of ginger zestiness, chipotle smokiness all bound together with dark berry tartness and the decadent residual body of a black barley wine.
Like all Abstrakt beers, AB:11 pushes the boundaries and challenges the perception of what beer is and what it can be. Brewed only once, AB:11 is excellent for drinking now, but also designed to be cellared for future enjoyment.

Opaque black - brown beer. Big pale tan head. Nose of floral ginger with a whisper of tropical fruits. Palate is soft with mild fine carbonation. Sweetish and soft ginger. Sweetish dark malts. Licorice - aniseed alcohol. Touch of sweet candy. Smooth finish - mild alcohol warmth. Interesting but perhaps could do with a little age.

Abstrakt 01 - 25 Vertical @ Brewdog Sheps Bush. Semi opaque dark brown beer, short lived bubbly pale tan head. Palate is smooth, pretty modest carbonation. Smooth dark malts, light caramel sweetness. Sweet mellow fruity ginger. Little herb. Decent chocolate covered ripe fruits. Still showing plenty of original character. 3.5

Bottle from Ølbutikken. Black with a small and lasting brown head. Aroma is sweet, malty, roasted malt, caramel, ginger and alcohol. Flavor is very sweet and rather bitter. Very sweet and rather bitter finish with noticeable alcohol. Oily. I’m not a big fan of the ginger in this one. 140713

Bottled @ Beer Temple. Dark brown color, short head. Aroma has raisins, dark fruit, hint of chocolate. Quite sweet taste, some fruitiness, hint of sourness even indeed. Quite a big sipper, but I never had the feeling I was drinking a barley wine. More a lighter bodied imperial stout, I mean that it lacks the creaminess you see in stouts a lot, but it is more sirupy like a barley wine. The fruity notes and soft spices underneath give it a more complex feel. It might not be the most perfect balance, but the complexity makes up for that. I quite liked it, but wouldn’t order a second one.

Bottle shared with Caesar and Lieselot @ Beer Temple. Opaque black color, virtually no head. Smell and taste malts, some roastyness and a lot of herbs or spices. Taste is almost the same: malts, some sourness, lots of herbs and spices and a touch of sweet. Meh, mediocre and overpriced.

Bottle shared with ClubGonzo. Has a deep brown to black colour with a small light brown head. In a complex aroma I pick up floral soap, coffee, licorice, oak and alcohol. The taste is powerful with much of the same with the addition of dark chocolate, sweet biscuits, some root vegetables and berries. Has a rich and oily mouthfeel and a light to medium bitterness. A complex and full-bodied beer. Very nice!

Bottle split at Pig’s Ear Cellar, Richmond, 29/06/13. #8952 of 9819. Mid black with a decent tan head. Nose is light roast, berry fruits, dark toffee, sugars, booze. Taste comprises charred malt, dark toffee, light cocoa dusting, sugars, berry fruits, spice, woody, light smoke, booze. Full bodied, fine carbonation, smooth and easy to drink. Decent BW, kind of an impy stout/barley wine hybrid.

375 ml bottle. A very dark brown body with a small brown head. Aroma of dark malt, dry fruit, berries and hint of liquorice and mild oak. Flavor is sweet malty, oak, fruit, balanced bitterness and a bit vinous in alcohol. Fine body and a good aftertaste. Interesting and tasty.

Woodshed 2.0. Bottle picked up at De Molen. The 37.5cl bottle pours with a deep mahogany body that supports a thin tan head of foam. The aroma offers up blueberry, prunes, black strap molasses and spicy black licorice. The taste is nectar like richness with blueberry fruity sweetness, spicy black licorice, prunes and brown sugar sweet black pepper. Nice rich sipper.
