Smaakhuis provided this 33 cl bottle much earlier this year. I’ve seen the weather take a turn for the cooler making a quadrupel tasting look attractive. A good quad deserves a glass like the Trappistes Rochefort I have ready. I pour and view a quite dark, amber-brown body and no head at all although there is a steady stream of bubbles rising to the top. I take a sniff and get raisins, a vinous effect, straw and an interesting hint of chocolate. And interestingly, the chocolate carries over to the taste along with red plums, wine, dark bread, yeast, figs and malt. I find the sensation to be heavy and dense. There’s some bitterness at the finish and also a small burn as I take a drink. All of these are qualities I appreciate. I must also say I have sampled a number of quadrupels that have been wine barrel aged and this one is the best. A quality tasting, I’m impressed by the whole thing.

9/13/11/14/12/13

330ml bottle. Opaque, dark brown colour with small, thick, creamy, moderately lasting anlacing, beige head. Sweet-ish, fruity and malty aroma, notes of dried fruit, raisin, fig, date, plum, some caramel, plum butter, blackcurrant, oaky, vinous overtones. Taste is sweet, sirupy malty, minimally dry fruity, notes of treacle, caramel, some dark honey, hints of raisin, date, fig, plum, plum butter, a tart-ish, fruity touch of blackcurrant, woody, vinous overtones. Viscous, sirupy texture, smooth and soft, creamy palate, very fine carbonation. Superbly balanced, widely disguised alcohol, astonishing freshness due to the tart-ish fruity aspects, extraordinary drinkability considering the high abv. Superb.

Bottle. Deep dark brown color with a red haze. Malty vinous aroma and flavor with dried fruit. Sweet, sharp alcohol. Toffee. Full bodied. Almost liquorish. Quite drinkable in spite of the almost sugary sweetness.

330ml bottle. Brewed: 04/04/13. Batch: 950. Pours an opaque dark brown with a small, fizzy, short lived, tan head that fully dissipates. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, light roast, chocolate, fig, raisin, red wine and oak. Sweet flavour of bready malt, caramel, light roast, sugar, fig, raisin, chocolate, licorice, toffee and oak with a warming red wine finish. Full body with a sticky, oily texture and soft carbonation. Great complexity. An excellent Quad.

Bottle. Brewed 2013 and tasted late 2017. Clear deep brown body with a small beige head. Very pleasant aroma, quite vinous with warming alcohol. The malt, dry fruit, some wood and hint of caramel in the background. It’s rather pleasant just to sit back and smell the glass for quite some time before tasting. The flavor is also vinous, but less dominant than in aroma, there is more sweet malt, chocolate, dry fruit, wood and a fine warming alcoholic finish. Fine balanced full bodied and very long lasting aftertaste. A nice one indeed that really has improved with age.
