Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA!

There’s no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; it’s pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious.

On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. We’ve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isn’t too different from Old Brown Dog, but it’s a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

Smak och doft av choklad, humle, malt, karamell, vanilj, laktris, nötter en aning jordig med lätt beska med smak av citrus. Mycket smakrik, bra balans på smakerna och trevlig beska.

Brown black pour with tan head and lace. Aroma is sweet malt, a touch of chocolate and hazelnut together with citrus hops. Flavor is light chocolate malt then a dose of citrus hops. A touch of floral/earthy undertones as well. Pretty hoppy and very tasty. Good balance between the hops and nutty/chocolaty brown ale attributes.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours deep reddish brown with a frothy goldenish beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of spotty and sticky trace on the glass. Smell is malty and earthy with sweet dark bread, resinous wood, moist soil, grapefruit rinds, moist grass, pine needles, dark roast coffee and sticky caramel. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and earthy with toasted malts, sweet dark bread, burnt caramel, dark roast coffee, resinous wood, moist soil, grapefruit rinds, orange zest, moist grass, oily pine cones and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is round, oily bitter and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with roasted malts, dark bread, moist grass, pine cones, resinous wood, liquorice powder, dark roast coffee and grapefruit rinds. Sweet sticky caramel wrapped in resinous hops. Tasty...

Bottle @ Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Pours hazy dark brown wit small light tan head. Clear aroma of malt, with fruity and hoppy touches. Bitter, hoppy and roasty flavour, with touches of malt, caramel and nuts. Fruity hints. Bitter and rough afteraste. Tastes more like a double brown ale than an ASA, but still quite good. Nice.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark nut brown color with orange highlights and a huge foamy tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was chocolate, malty, wood, fruity hops, melon, leather and tobacco. The flavor was bitter, roasty, malty and woody with notes of caramel, nut, floral hops and fruity hops followed by leather and tobacco, Very long finish. Medium body. Solid.

Tap at stags head. Pours a murky brown with decent head. Nose is piney hops. Tastes of earthy bitterness, resin, pine, toast, and some grapefruit. Bitter palate a touch harsh bit still pleasant.
