Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA!
There’s no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; it’s pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious.
On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. We’ve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isn’t too different from Old Brown Dog, but it’s a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Shop Rite, 4/18/14, as Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale
Aroma: The aroma is nutty malts, some roasted notes, chocolate, pine, and booze
Appearance: It pours a murky brown color with a small tan head and drippy lace
Flavor: The flavor is roasted/burnt malts and nuts, earthy hops, pine, and a hint of booze
Palate: Medium-full bodied, it has an average-plus carbonation, a bit of heat, and a long, dry finish
Overall Impression: I thought this beer was only okay overall. There's no major flaw among the various components, but they just don't meld together all that well. Decent.

Surprisingly good because I didn’t really know what I was ordering - it was too busy to ask what the name is but I saw ’Durty’ on the tap. Pours brown with good head and lacing. Citrus hops, caramelized and lightly roasted malt. Medium bitter finish with some sweetness. Tap at Blackjack.

Murky reddish-brown color with a medium foamy light beige head that recedes steadily. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of bready malt, hops and pine. The finish is sweet with a caramel malt and roasted nutty aftertaste. Decent overall.

12oz bottle. Unfiltered deep burgundy-brown body. Creamy beige head. A really solid beer, better and bigger than most things that get put into six-packs these days. Real malt depth...caramel, chocolate, toffee. There is a nice hop balance with some nice cool Simcoe touches, but the rich malts still take center stage. Really solid beer.

12oz bottle pours a muddy brown with some lacing, beige head. Nose has a strong orange component, blood orange, soapy, pithy, some caramel, some brown sugar, a little bread crust, some dried pine needles. Flavor is bitter and pithy, orange rind, a little grapefruit rind, pine needles, soap, bread crust, brown sugar. Spicy, bitter, zesty finish.
