Our first beer, Shoals Pale Ale debuted on July 16, 1994 on Portsmouth’s historic waterfront. Our interpretation of a classic English ale is copper-colored, medium-bodied and pleasantly hopped. Its flavor is delightfully complex yet balanced: tangy fruit at the start, with an assertive hop crispness and a long malty finish that one well-known beer writer has compared to the flavor of freshly-baked bread.
The Samuel Haley House, which is featured on the label still stands on Smuttynose Island, one of nine Isles of Shoals, just off the New Hampshire coast. The rich lore of the islands holds that Samuel Haley paid for this house with four bars of pirate silver he found exploring the island. And yes, there are hordes of seagulls on Smuttynose Island.

Nose is yeast, peach, grain. Taste is cereal, biscuit, light bitterness malt. Incredibly forgettable bitter. I seem to have a drink with a completely different taste profile to some of the other reviews. Not exporting well?

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; cloudy dark chestnut brown pour with a thin beige head, malt and pine aroma, taste has caramel, dark fruit, lightly toasted bread, pine, citrus, creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle from Cornelius. Hazy chestnut brown body with a thick off-white head. Light lacing. Aroma of leafy earthiness, dirt, tea and a minty finish. Flavour of grassy bitterness, caramel and lightly roasted malt. Thin body with a watery, slightly oily mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Crisp and simple. Tastes like a classic Bitter.

Bottle from StarmoreBoss, Sheffield. Hazy, copper colour. Glossy, bubbly, off white head. Blimey. What happened? There’s some citric bitterness in there. Some sweet malt. That’s about it, really.

Bottle. Light orange brown with a thin head. Aroma is piney resin. Flavour is biscuity malt, spicy, dry bitter hop finish. Dry bitter palate.

355ml bottle from Appellation Wines - cheers Ash! Pours clear amber with a decent off-white head. Aromas are funky yeast, light orange, sherbet. Agree is smells a bit off! Taste brings more citrus, bitter.Creamy texture, medium body. Not convinced.

355ml bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - golden amber with a nice head. Nose - a bit of funky farmyard. Smells a bit off. Taste - orange and grapefruit Palate - medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - the nose was a real off-put but it improved after that.

This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a nice looking hazy orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. The lacing was somewhat all around as it didn’t really show much uniformity towards the glass. It just kind of went all over the place.
The smell had a decent amount of light piney hops that seemed to fade as the beer went down. The malts seemed to increase as the beer warmed up.
The taste acted the same way.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to somewhat medium. The carbonation seemed to be fairly well done as there was just enough harshness but still an inviting smoothness to round it all out.
Overall, this was a pretty good English Pale Ale.

Some citrus, some pale ale. Comes together decently. Finishes with light citrus sourness. Clear amber with good head and lacing. On tap at DC Summerfest in the VIP section I snuck into.
