Imperial stout is descended from the strongest - ’stoutest’ - porter brewed in Britain in the 18th century, a beer that found particular favour with the Tsar of Russia in St Petersburg, which is where it is believed to get its ’imperial’ designation from. It was a beer that could be laid down for years, or enjoyed straight away.
Strannik: the pilgrim, the one who travels. A beer of simple means - deriving strength from pale malted barley and character through four roasted malts. British hops provide both the rounded bitterness and the floral, spicy notes to compliment the roast and chocolate.

On tap at Dunkbar. Jet black with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of licorice, vanilla and roasted malt with a hint of dark berries. Sweet roasted flavour with licorice and marshmallow.

Can at home from Beer Shop Hitchin. A subdued pour and a massive hit of malt on the nose. The flavour was intense with burnt malt, soy, huge coffee and an overwhelming savouriness that left me questioning whether of not I enjoyed it. It was an ideal can for a freezing cold nigh with snow on the ground, but not an experience that I will rush to repeat. It was a bit too much for me and lacked a smoothness in the mouthfeel.

Canned. Poured nice black in coloe, thick creamy espresso head. Coffee, salty licorice, roastedness delivers in the aroma. Even more coffeeand roastedness in flavor, mild vinous notes, licorice, mild spicyness. Long roasty finish. Lovely.

330ml can. Pours black with a small tan head instantly disappearing. Aroma of dark fruits, berries, raisin, brown sugar, roast malt, chocolate. Taste is similar, dark fruits, berries and dried fruits dominate, roasted malts and chocolate, sweet, hides the booze well. Full bodied, fine carbonation, thick smooth creamy mouthfeel. Incredible.

Jeg går planken på True North Stavanger på deres 1-årsdag, nov-17: brunsvart med fint skum som varer. Supersaftig aroma og smak med dessertsjokolader, honning, luksuskaffe, granskudd, appelsinmarmelade i en solid maltkropp. Mild bitterhet i den halvsøte ettersmaken.

Can from Bottle Baron. Black body with a medium tan head that gradually fades. Faint lacing. Aroma of nuts, treacle and cocoa powder. Flavour of steel, wood and dark chocolate. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. It’s pretty good but, for me, it lacks the expected depth and complexity for the ABV.

Tap @ Mig & Ølsnedkeren, 9%. Very dark brown with small beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, caramel and liquorice. Flavour is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, caramel, liquorice, little salt liquorice, sweet and a little bitter.
