Imperial stout is descended from the strongest - ’stoutest’ - porter brewed in Britain in the 18th century, a beer that found particular favour with the Tsar of Russia in St Petersburg, which is where it is believed to get its ’imperial’ designation from. It was a beer that could be laid down for years, or enjoyed straight away.

Strannik: the pilgrim, the one who travels. A beer of simple means - deriving strength from pale malted barley and character through four roasted malts. British hops provide both the rounded bitterness and the floral, spicy notes to compliment the roast and chocolate.

Drink one, keep one.

Allow the flavours to develop over the years before experiencing this classic stout.

Malt bill: Pale malt, roasted barley, chocolate malt, brown malt, crystal malt, oats and brown sugar.

330ml bottle. Pours black in colour with a tan foam head leaving lacing. Nose of roasted malt, dark fruits, chocolate & coffee. Flavour is roast malt, sweetish with dark chocolate, dried fruit, raisins, coffee, some bitterness. Oily mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, finish is lingering sweet and dry earthy roast bitter. Nicely drinkable.

Medium brown head. Opaque black body. Roasty syrupy toffee aroma with earthy chocolatey notes. Sweetish roasty earthy toffee taste with burnt notes. Mid-bodied. Sharpish, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish roasty resiny chocolatey aftertaste with burnt plastic notes. Nice, drinkable. (0.33l bottle, I forget where from, could be Manchester.)

Opaque dark brown - black beer, good pale tan head. Palate is a little airy, semi dry and slightly crisp. Smooth dark malts, mild tang. Light coffee and a little dark chocolate. Mild dark fruits. Light dry finish. A little thin, but nicely joined up.

Bottle thanks to BenH. Appearance - opaque black with a nice creamy head. Nose - savoury, earthy, dark chocolate. Taste - creamy chocolate, again earthy and savoury. Dry smoky edge to it. Tarry finish. Palate - fairly big structure, dry texture and dry balanced finish. Overall - yep, a nice dry imperial. This one grew on me.

Keg at Refectory (Northern Monk) Leeds ,Saturday 21st February 2015 Black with a filmy tan head and rim. Bitter and roasty and rather refreshingly for this style this is not super smooth or sweet, it tastes a little edges and with a bit of attitude, so quite appropriate that it’s from the north. Soft in the mouth but with a bitter liquorice edge, and little dark bitter fruit. Very good. A7 A4 T8 P5 Ov15 3.8

@Indyman - Black with thick, creamy coffee head. Plenty of roasted malts in the aroma. Taste is rich and smooth. It’s a bit boozy but also rich and warming with roasted malts aplenty.
