Wet-Hopped Ale
Each fall, our brewhouse looks more like a greenhouse as thousands of pounds of wet hop cones arrive within hours of being picked by some of our favorite local hop growers. Acting quickly, we then load up these wet hops into what will become Harvest Ale – an impossibly aromatic and bright IPA bursting with fresh pine, melon and citrus notes. Our ode to the beauty that is the wet, American hop.

Bottle. Lemon malt and earthy citrus peel aroma. Hazy golden yellow with one-finger head (guess I should have poured it quicker). Sweet orange malt and moderately bitter and tangy grapefruit peel/pine flavor. Hops flavor very interesting and unique. Excellent.

Hopfiger Beginn, grasig, deutlich bitter. 9/11/9/12/12/12

Purchased at Evolution Wine & Spirits in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on a day off while making seitan and doing errands. Appearance is a slightly cloudy gold with a very thin white head, not sure why it differs so much from the description. Aroma has a nice, pleasant citrus aroma with notes of orange peel. Taste packs a moderately bitter punch with notes of sweet orange, hops, hay, thin to moderate thickness. It’s pretty good but not as good as expected.

Pours clear light gold with a tall white head. Aroma of honey, orange, and light lemon. The flavor is light yet assertively bitter that goes all the way to the finish. Just enough malt sweetness in the middle to balance it out nicely. Good one.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled 9/20/2017. Pours lightly hazy pale golden/yellow color with a 1 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, lemon/orange zest, light pepper, pine, light honey, biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, lemon/orange zest, light pepper, pine, light honey, biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, grassy, citrus peel bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, lemon/orange peel, pepper, pine, biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Fairly crisp finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 7.6%. Overall this is a fantastic wet hopped IPA! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Perfectly balanced juicy/dank hop complexity; nice bready malt backbone, with no residual sweetness. Never overly aggressive. A highly enjoyable offering.

Location: 12oz bottle from jcos, 10/23/12, Bottled 10/4/12
Aroma: The nose is pretty clean, it is decently hoppy with some citrus and pine, and a little malty
Appearance: This one pours a clear golden-orange color with a small white head and some drippy lace
Flavor: The taste is much like the nose, with a clean medium bitter hoppiness and some light sweetness
Palate: The body is fairly light, it drinks clean and smooth, has an average carbonation, and a fairly dry finish
Overall Impression: Overall, this is a solid beer, and a very good example of a wet hop IPA. It drinks nicely, and the components are quite good. At first, it felt a bit lacking to me compared to what I was expecting, but it really improves as it warms to close to room temperature.

Pours a medium golden color with a decent white head that dissipates rather quickly. I can smell the citrus and pine as soon as I pop the top off of this one. Resinous, dank, grapefruit, and apricot aromas atop a sweet sugary base waft into my olfactory system. The flavor is a hint of bready and caramel malt up front before the palette is filled with hoppy goodness. Pine and resinous topped citrus and tropical fruit flavors tip the flavor balance well onto the hop side. Light to moderate hop bitterness. Medium body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet resinous mouthfeel. I felt this was a touch on the sweet side, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless.

My first wet-hopped ale. Bottled 10/4/12 so brewed about 1.5 months ago. Very excited to try this. I’m not a huge fan of Founder’s but let’s see how this measures up to fresh homebrew or Hill Farmstead IPAs. Off-cloudy golden brown. 2 fingers white head. Scent is heavy with Centennial, Simcoe and Citra. Maybe Chinook? It has this nice piney / citrus dry hop scent. Taste is gorgeous. Well balanced, not too malty or bitter. Great tropical mix with the pine cone taste I expected. Heavier body than expected. Delicious.
