You’ve made it to 547 Haight Street. This destination is more San Francisco than Rice A Roni, Chinatown, and Lombard Street combined. Welcome to Broadway for brewers everywhere. Everyone who is anyone has poured their kegs here. For the last 20 years, this place has launched careers, confirmed legacies, and since 1987 the only name you need to know is David Keene.
Take a seat. Tip Strong. Nod appreciatively and don’t ask stupid questions. Welcome to Big Daddy’s House known to most simply as "The T-Room." Here the bartenders are fluent in English, German, Flemish, French, Waloon and Czech. But they’re most known for their American Lip Service. Watch it. The lady with the jet black hair behind the bar eats idiots for lunch.
At 547 Haight Street, you won’t find any Cable Cars except for this one. But if you’re standing outside the Dutch Doors of the World Famous Toranado, you surely found the most interesting place in all San Francisco. Its’ about RESPECT. Dave you continue to have ours. 2010 Bottle shared at Mikey’s tasting. Pours cloudy orange. Nose of orange zest, tart fruit and funky basement. Taste if funky tart fruit, zest, lemongrass and farmhouse yeast.

2009 bottle at GABF 2010 - quite often I find these LA sours to be far too acetic and lacking balance, but when they are on, they are sooo on - and brother, is this on - turbid wheat-colored beer - dry and oaky, tannins out the wazoo - very mild apricot and pineapple sweetness to temper the moderate acidity - moderate lacto character and low to medium funkiness - freakin’ delicious.

Toronado 23rd Anniversary. Some generous soul shared a full vertical at the anniversary party. I thoroughly enjoyed the beer, though I’m not really sure why it deserves quite so much hype. This is a rather funky sour. The fresh stuff had a lot of sulfur, while the older bottles had relatively strong barnyard notes, at least for an American sour. The beer was medium sour and very dry. Older vintages were stronger on the sour, but it never got too puckery. It’s surprisingly restrained, almost too restrained. A mix of vinous and dry cidery notes with hints of lemons are the fruitiest notes that I’m getting. There’s some nice oak and musty yeast flavors in there. The brett, oak and fruit notes go together very well and the beer is easy to drink, but it seemed a bit light on complexity. A very good sour, but I’m a little surprised that this is one of the most wanted beers around. (the 2010 version was definitely the weakest, but I could imagine it improving with time)

Bottle (2009) shared with gorditoabd at Toronado. The excitement is palpable as the orange/good stuff is poured. Head is small and fizzy and aromas are a nice mix of straight barn and lemon funk with a little bit of a light earthy and oak edge. First sip is amazing. Even though it is a little cold, it’s full of lemon peel, oak, barnyard, hay or some kind of light autumn leaves. As it warms a bit there is a really odd sweetness that flits around and peeks out from time to time. After thinking and thinking about it, I decide it’s coconut and once the thought of coconut is in my head it really comes out strong. Mouthfeel is light and very fizzy and the sour stings the tongue a bit long after the aftertaste goes away.

Huge thanks to Maltzilla for that 07 bottle. Looks really great, I like that Lost Abbey style. The beer in the glass quite zippy, small head. Very fruity aroma. Starts quite sourish, fruity like peaches and apricot, also a bit spicy. Finish a bit less sourish, still wonderful fruity and dry, very well balanced and drinkable. A great beer!

Sampled at DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010. Pours a clear orange with very little spitty white head. Aroma of oranges, light hay, lightly grassy, cotton candy. Flavor is tart, lemons, grapefruit, apples, citrus peel, light candy, nectarines. Finish is dry, acidic and tart.

750 ml bottle at DC Epic Sour Tasting 2010, courtesy of Spencer, thank you sir! Clear golden, scant head and lacing. Aroma of lemon and vacuum cleaner bag (but in a good way). Taste is acidic grapefruit and lemon. Decent. Tastier with the yeast added.

’07 bottle. Cloudy gold appearance. Very low carbonation, and this has me hoping for something like an unblended lambic to justify the hype this beer has received. Tons of brett character in the aroma and flavor. Just a little sour, with some Turkish apricot and a little acid. Minimally sour. Light fruit finish. For the cost of this bottle, I just don’t get the big deal. Isabelle Proximus is a world better.

Bottled, 2007 vintage, thanks Marsiblursi! Hazy golden, small head. Sweaty nose with brett and barnyard. Honey sweetness dried by vinegar and brett. Medium bodied with rounded spritzy mouthfeel. Lemony finish.

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours orange gold with a small white, very effervescent head. Aroma is mildly acidic and sour in a fruit sort of way. Medium body with prickly carbonation. Flavor is sour and tart. Sort of cooking cherry, but more persimmon. Quite woody. Finishes smooth. And more than a bit tannic.
