Monk's Brew aka Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

B.B.D. (best before date) is 25/06/20 written on top of black cap. Goes under "Monk’s Brew" at the LCBO. Pours a hazy copper colour with amber highlights. The head is big, beige, frothy, long lasting and leaves creamy-foamy thick lacing. Aromas of many dark fruits, roasted malts, nutty malts (or yeast) and hops. Something is different though and can be felt more in the taste. Kind of vinous. Sweet grape juices with a little vinegar. Nutty notes again, with some milder dark fruits. Alcohol is present as well. An interesting Quad, but not one I would have again.

Monks Elixir a ruby brown with a light beige head. The nose is rum & caramel with some maple syrup & vanilla. The body is light but spritzy and effervescently refreshing. The taste is tart cranberries, rum, oak, maple syrup - frikin delicious!

After an unbelievably grinding, brutal, mentally-crushing, couple of days. (You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.) I finally had the time to sit down to a couple of good beers. This bad boy pours a cloudy earthy brown with a dusty brown head. Smells lie raisins, molasses and malts, with just a hint of booze. Decent carbonation in my bottle. The taste isn’t as rich as I thought it would be. I get booze, malts, that nice fruitiness seems to have gone AWOL. Fuck I don’t know. I’m just happy to be less homeless, poorer and having a beer.

(330ml bottle from the LCBO, as "Monk’s Brew") Pours a clear medium brown tinged red with a small off white head that faded to a ring with lots of spotty lace. Aroma is predominately sweet with a faint sourish edge, and a little spicy. Bready caramel sweet malt and yeast combo has dried and stewed read fruit, maybe currants?, candied apple, lots of brown sugar, Christmas cake spices. Once the scent of artificial grape flavouring is raised by my girlfriend that is hard to escape. Palate has quite sweet caramel and brown sugar core, candied fruit, a little bready, a diffuse sort of herbal spice building in the finish, fair amount of alcohol heat. Also a bit of that grape flavouring again, after it’s mentioned. Medium body, a little slick and light for the style, soft carb. It’s a pretty good stab at a style with some excellent benchmarks, but compared to the best abts it is not as rich and mouth filling, and lacks the complexity and finish to match the sweet malts.

Piwo smaczne slodowe wyczuwalne figi i daktyle. odrobina suszonych sliwek w czekoladzie. Alkohol niestety lekko wyczuwalny ale szlachetny troche do rumu i scherry byl podobny. Rozgrzewal na koncu do tego chmiel na samej koncowce sie pojawil i cieplo utrzymywalo jego goryczke. Wyglad ladna piana kremowa nawet trwala lekko oblepiajaca kielich Rocheforta.. Zabojcza etykieta troche jakby komiczna no ale ogolnie piwo smaczne

With Daria & Filip @MBR, Zagreb. Poured a very dark body with a big off white head. Heavy malty aroma with strong notes of apple compote, fruity, berryish, but doesn’t overextend itself. The taste is, obviously built on a solid sweet malty backbone, fruity, creamy, some notes of grapes, clean and balanced, only slightly oily. All in all a damn well executed beer.

Old rating rerated 22.08.2014, 0,33l bottle @ home:
Nice creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly mild and sweet, yeast, almonds, sugar, bananabread, grass, raisins, "knekk", hints og coffee and licorice. Taste is sweet, sugar, alcohol, "knekk", yeast, nuts, raisins, sour coffee, citrus peel, minerals, grass, cardboard. Medium to longlasting bitterness, slightly harsh and fizzy mouthfeel. Fair enough, not really my cup of tea.
