XXIV. 24 years after Black Butte Porter’s debut, our potent, layered, imperial tribute returns. As usual, it’s a jazz riff, guided by the brewer’s muse and the lure of exotic ingredients. Artisanal dark chocolate nibs. Daglet dates. Mission figs. It may, possibly, hopefully, be the best edition yet. But, as it should be, you’ll be the judge of that.

2013-02-23, bottle from Whole Foods Henderson, NV, 7-4-8-3-15=37
Black color, with medium sized beige head. The aroma of roasted malt is quite mild, with hints of liquorice, and herbal Italian digestive. Good body structure, and good chocolate flavor, with a moderate minty/herbal touch.

2013-01-22, draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver, 7-4-8-4-16=39
Black color with creamy head, nice lace. Aroma of roasted malts, some wood, some vanilla, some sourness, and a hint of coffee and liquorice. Good body strength, with a good dark chocolate flavor, and a light sour and fruity touch, also some vanilla and very light tobacco; correct bitterness, with some hidden hop qualities; in the final there is a light impression of liquorice.
Very good, fresh, dynamic.

Bottle at Freakin’ Frog. Dark brownish-black pour with a medium foamy khaki head that diminishes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma is malty with some chocolate and dark fruit notes. Full-bodied with a burnt malt character and notes of figs, dark chocolate and subtle booze. The finish is rich with a dark malty and oaky aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Bomber from Pangaea Bottle Shop. Pours very dark brown/black with a foamy tan head. Aromas of dark fruit and chocolate. Med + body. Flavor is dark chocolate alternating with dark fruits. It’s darkly bitter. The burnt malt is smooth. Heat is not an issue. The fruits engender an ache in the saliva glands. I think I’ve had something similar, but? This is pretty good stuff.

The 22oz black waxed bomber pours very dark with a full firm mocha colored head of foam. The aroma delivers sweet bourbon, chocolate malt balls, black strap molasses and as it warmed more and more boozy bourbon like notes. Wow, the taste is rich and full and lingers for days. I get smooth bourbon and sugary bourbon hard candy moving into black strap molasses and a black patent like burnt note. Damn, this is a sipper for sure and I poured too much as the bourbon like booze notes build up quickly and become too much before long. Behind those notes is a pleasing oasis consisting of dark chocolate, a bit of coconut and vanilla as well as prune to date to fig like sweet dark fruity esters. Nice sipper for sure.

650 ml thanks to Ed. Pours a dark black color with a medium beige head. A big roasted nose with dark fruit and oranges. Certainly a balanced big beer with oranges, cocoa, dark fruit, earthy figs, light vanilla. Very good.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours dark brown with thin tan head. Aromas of dark roasted malts, chocolate and dark fruits. Flavors of sweet figs, bitter dark chocolate, roasted malts, and molasses. Medium to full body with minimal carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Not nearly as good as the XXI or XXIII. Thanks Craig.
