In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew -- a dark beer that's a fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root. It's a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.

Featuring the album's iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Head's Bitches Brew was unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, on June 5, 2010, at the National Building Museum, Washington DC.

Haven't experienced the Bitches Brew album? Two 40th anniversary editions of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew -- a Legacy Edition and a deluxe Collector's Edition -- are available.

According to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, the ale is "the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album."

Sam was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan."

"There's a spirit of innovation, of creativity and individuality, that's at the core of Miles' music," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "Sam and Dogfish Head approach their art from the same place and consequently the marriage is an easy and cool one."

Draught at The Old Toad Dogfish Head Fest 5. Black with lace. Roasty, smoky nose, bacon, wood, coffee. Well smoky flavor, with bonito flavkes and bacon, dark chocolate, coffee. Bitter finish from hops and roast. A bit too woody, and quite sweet, but good.

Opaque black beer, tidy brown head. Dark malt nose with a little coca cola. Semi soft and semi dry palate. Dark chocolate malt, soft with no bitterness. Tangy sweet coca cola balances well. Typically Dogfish in as much as I haven’t tasted anything quite like it before. But it’s not outrageous, just a very tasty drinkable beer.

Picked this up at the DFH Ale House on the 21st of January just after lunch. It was their last bottle and was used for display purposes only. Paid about $22 for it because the Ale House charges way more than they should for DFH beers.

A - Poured pitch black into the glass. 2 Finger coffee coloured head with big and tiny bubbles. It subsided fairly quickly. SRM of 70? Pretty much black.

S - Gigantic malt backbone. Huge coffee notes, honey, flowers, ginger and mild bits of dark fruits. Dry cherries?

T - Very sweet taste. Roasted malts, coffee and a very boozy burn in my chest. the alcohol is very noticeable.Mild chocolate and a middle of the tongue hop bitterness that took me by surprise.

M - 60% carbonation on the mouth swish. Heavy body (of course) and very high coffee malt finish.

O - This is a standard Imperial Stout. It’s good and the honey and coffee is nice but it’s a bit too spicy, maybe too fleeting in the taste after swallowing. It’s just falling short in some way. nice but not memorable.

750 ml bottle. Close to black body with a small, dense brown head. Strong aroma of dark malt, molasses, fruity hops and bouillon. Flavor is sweet and light roasted malt, caramel, coffee, dry fruit and balanced bitterness. Hint of warming alcohol. Nice body and long aftertaste. Balanced, tasty, complex and very nice brew.

Draft at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Deep opaque brown-black body, thin light brown head. Chocolaty, roasty nose with molasses, sticky burnt sugars, coffee beans, and hints of vanilla. Big roasty, chalky body with dark chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts, with interesting tangy honey notes, ash, and a bitter, burnt finish with warming alcohol. Very good.

Out of a 750ml bottle in a tulip glass. Pour is jet black with a massive deep brown head. Sweet grain and chocolate dominate the nose. Rich prune as well. Taste is very smooth and the 9% ABV hides itself. The honey smooths out this beer and there is not too much acid or roast. Viscous mouthfeel coats the entire mouth. Linger forever.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry coffee notes with dry black chocolate notes and some light vinous notes. Taste I also dominated by light dry coffee notes with some black chocolates notes. Light vinous notes are also discernable and some light hoppy notes can also be detected. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed and enjoyable though lacking a little something. Definitely not the best stout form this brewer.

Draft in a sniffer. Sunset Grill and Tap. Tons of retention, lacing coats the glass. Nose and taste is complex. Licorice, coffee, chocolate cake. Oak and a slightly more bozzey finish. The flavors mingle and change as it warms. Lots of roasted character with a slick, oily mouthfeel. Good but not amazing at $8.99 for 10 oz. Glass.
