In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew -- a dark beer that's a fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root. It's a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.

Featuring the album's iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Head's Bitches Brew was unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, on June 5, 2010, at the National Building Museum, Washington DC.

Haven't experienced the Bitches Brew album? Two 40th anniversary editions of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew -- a Legacy Edition and a deluxe Collector's Edition -- are available.

According to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, the ale is "the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album."

Sam was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan."

"There's a spirit of innovation, of creativity and individuality, that's at the core of Miles' music," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "Sam and Dogfish Head approach their art from the same place and consequently the marriage is an easy and cool one."

Tap. I was really excited to try this on tap. Pours opaque black with a small brown head and some lacing. Aroma fairly muted with notes of chocolate, dark roasted malt, whiskey, coffee. Flavor is the same plus honey and spices, medium sweet, medium coffee bitter with a light citric astringency. Very full bodied with a lightly bitter warming alcohol finish. Tons of potential, but this one came up a bit short for me.

Bottle, 75cl. A wonderful looking beer, with its black body and finger-thick beige head. There’s lots of molasses on the nose, with coffee, chocolate, licorice and dark malt extract blending in. Some beef stock and honey as well. The flavor is on the sweet side, and to be honest, not equally alluring as the aroma. Licorice, molasses, beef stock and chocolate. Sweetness, chocolate and coffee notes in the end. It’s full-bodied and sticky-sweet on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation. Overall, it’s certainly a pleasant beer, but the flavor feels a bit one dimensional, in a strange way. Love the aroma though. 111229

Location: 750m ml bottle from jcos, 8/31/12

Aroma: The aroma has some roasted malts, smoke, wood, toffee, liqourice, and a little honey
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a thick brown head and heavy brown lace
Flavor: The taste is pretty complex, with a nice malt profile, fairly roasted, and a with a smoky finish
Palate: The body is full, with a thick, rich, creamy mouthfeel, a soft carbonation, and a dry, smoky finish
Overall Impression: Thanks, Kramer! I've been holding on to this one for a while so I could share it with Mike, and we finally found the perfect day to drink it! Man this one is tasty, it is so smooth and drinkable that you just can't help but enjoy it. Lives up to the hype.

bottle, 3000th rating - Pours black with a lingering dark tan head. It has a rich aroma of chocolate malt with some coffee. The flavor is very sweet and full of chocolate character. It’s full bodied and intense. I’m not specifically noticing honey. There seem to be some mild herbals in the background, but mostly it’s a big, sweet, chocolate rich imperial stout. Maybe the time it’s spent aging has masked some subtleties under all that sweetness. Well done nonetheless.
