In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew -- a dark beer that's a fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root. It's a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.

Featuring the album's iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Head's Bitches Brew was unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, on June 5, 2010, at the National Building Museum, Washington DC.

Haven't experienced the Bitches Brew album? Two 40th anniversary editions of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew -- a Legacy Edition and a deluxe Collector's Edition -- are available.

According to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, the ale is "the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album."

Sam was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan."

"There's a spirit of innovation, of creativity and individuality, that's at the core of Miles' music," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "Sam and Dogfish Head approach their art from the same place and consequently the marriage is an easy and cool one."

Bottle split at the Kernel, big thanks to Leighton, 09/11/13. Pitch black with a moderate dirty tan covering. Nose is roast malt, molastic blastic, light smoke, bitter dark chocolate waftings, boozey tones. Taste comprises tangy dark fruit, bitter chocolate, hint of soap, touch of spice. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, dark roast malt linger and sweet tones in the finish. Ok drinkable impy affiar but pretty low to mid ranking for the style in my book.

Bottle shared at The Kernel, London - this one I got in Brooklyn back in 2010. So, it’s Batch 1. Pours clear, black-brown with a frothy, beige head - looks great. Tangy, dark fruits in the aroma, touches of dry cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with further tangy dark malt character, mild chocolate, soft roast. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Moderately sweet on the finish with light dry chocolate, still more tangy dark fruits. Has aged pretty well. I actually wish it was sweeter and sans the tangy edge. Still, pretty nifty.

Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is roasty, earth, toast, charred wood, dark fruit, blackcurrant, toffee and treacle. The taste is dark fruit...plum, blackcurrant, bramble, caramel, treacle, light tartness, roasted malt, sherbet and tart green apple with a touch of tartness to it. Full body and moderate carbonation. A bit like a good ol’ UK Impy stout. Nice work.

Bottle at Dean’s Birthday Tasting, August 2013. Poured a deep mahogany with a thin tan head. The aroma is rich, resinous and with some citrus fruit. The flavour is medium bitter sweet, with some roasted malts, liqourice, fudgy caramel and a touch of resin on the smooth slightly watery palate. A great beer for sure. Would love to taste it at a range of temperatures and could be great barrel aged.

25.4 ounce bottle. Opaque black liquid topped by a small bubbly tan head that disappeared quickly. Rich espresso roasted malt aroma with notes of bittersweet cocoa and toasted nuts. Bittersweet roasted malt tastes like espresso mixed with chocolate syrup. Notes of earthy malt and spicy hops balance this Imperial Stout. The gesho root adds a peppery nuance. There is an underlying smokiness as well that adds a complexity to the overall flavor.

Peculiarly aged bottle sample courtesy of mysterious forces, from a 750 ml. bomber. Blackish, brownish liquid. Smell is lightly vinous, chocolate, lightly roasted malts, slight smoke, some tree roots. Vinous sticky roast blended witch chocolate, light smoke, overripe dark fruits, three roots and bark plus alternative herb. Agreable.
