Samuel Adams Latitude 48 Ahtanum IPA is brewed with only Ahtanum hops, a newer variety from the Yakima Valley area of WA. The hops are added at three points during the brewing process -- bittering, late kettle and dry hopping. Ahtanum hops contribute a balanced and typically "American" orange peel, piney and floral flavor and aroma to this brew, balanced by a slight sweetness and full body from the five different malts.

Another under hopped version of this beer (pretty much the Zeus and the simcoe were the only single hops that weren’t) - sugary malt sweetness swallows up most of the hop character - there is some peppery and woody character on the tail end, but this mostly tastes like sweet caramel, with only a mild acidity to break it - not exactly flawed or anything, just lacking character.

Bottle (best before of September 2011). I have minimal experience with Ahtanum by itself (as far as I know), and have never brewed with it, so I am glad to see this in single hop form. Pours with a clear orange, to slightly copper hued body with a large, bone/off-white hued head that lasts and leaves good lacing. Aromas of citrus (orange) peel, rose water, light lemon, pepper, floral hops. Some honey (citrus honey), light brown sugar. Bready malt profile, medium to light esters. Flavors are hoppy herbal, pine, spruce, lightly medicinal, light orange and pink peppercorns. Malt profile is bready and pretty dry. Decently herbaceous hops, decently spicy finish. Some what harsh hop bitterness in the finish (not intensity, just feel). Medium bitter balance. Some carbonic acid bite. Fermentation character is pretty clean. Lively bubbles. Pretty dry. I’m kind of luke warm on this hop to be honest. It might be what I dislike in the regular Latitude.

bottle pours light amber with a thin tan head. Aroma is light and floral with sour citrus notes as well. Flavor is biscuit and toast with a metalic pine hop that is pretty assertive. There is a little citrus lingering but the bitterness still comes off a little metalic to me.
