Samuel Adams Latitude 48 Ahtanum IPA is brewed with only Ahtanum hops, a newer variety from the Yakima Valley area of WA. The hops are added at three points during the brewing process -- bittering, late kettle and dry hopping. Ahtanum hops contribute a balanced and typically "American" orange peel, piney and floral flavor and aroma to this brew, balanced by a slight sweetness and full body from the five different malts.

Latitude 48 IPA mixed pack. Poured a golden, almost copper color with a medium mostly white head. Aroma had earthy hop notes, touch of sweetness in the nose. Flavor was pretty clean, refreshing. Almost a worthy beer to have entirely on its own.

Bottle from the Natomas BevMo. Pours amber with a foamy/creamy beige head. Aroma is sort of earthy fruit, suggesting mushroom. Nice body. Flavor is extremely floral, with citrus background. Excellent.

12oz bottle. Filtered orange-tan. Creamy white head. Sweet resinous, piny hop aroma, bitter citrus tones. Not bad. I find this to be a little more interesting than the EKG, giving a more tropical hop quality than I’d expect from a Sam Adams beer. Piny hop taste, pretty solid.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark caramel-amber color with a medium sized foamy orange-white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was spicy and piney with notes of grapefruit and orange. The flavor was pine, grapefruit, orange and spice with a light caramel undertone. The finish was long pine, orange and floral hops. Medium body. Interesting.

Bottle. Pour a clear amber with an off-white head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has a combination of light tropical fruits, light citrus and just a bit of grassy hops. Flavor is similar with grass in the start but citrus and tropical fruits quickly taking over.

The Ahtanum version of this brew makes for a nice IPA, with a little bit of citrus and pine, and a solid caramel-tinged malt background. The finish is neither strong nor overtly resinous; rather, it lingers with an easygoing herbal bitterness that leaves you surprised with Ahtanum’s drinkability. This hop seems a little weak to be carrying its own IPA, and this beer flirts heavily with APA-dom, but still makes for a good pint.

Copper glow that looks exactly the same as the East Kent varietal asisde from the head which is noticeably smaller on this version. Aroma of resin and pine in the hops very strong with a juicy and slightly mouthwatering note - much less herbal and grassy than the East Kent and seemingly higher in Alpha Acids (although, I’m sure this is true). Medium-bodied; Pungent resiny and piney flavour hops with a mild kick then showing a little odd mustiness and a slightly herbal aspect, but just not that much of a lingering hop bitterness - stronger than the East Kent, but nothing nice for an IPA in general. Aftertaste is piney and malty, but thats about it - not very strong and fairly mild, albeit stronger than the East Ken. Overall, a decent IPA at most, this version I preferred to the East Kent varietal, but I’d take most other IPAs over this for sure. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from the Beer Baron in Livonia, Michigan on 30-April-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 17-May-2011 in a vertical tasting with the East Kent IPA from Sam Adams - both bottles were US$1.99 each. Of the two, I thought this was a ’better’ IPA, because it had slightly higher hoppiness but a more well-rounded characteristic.

Pours deep dark amber into a Sam glass. Off-white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Sweet tropical fruit and resin aromas. Medium-bodied with sweet caramel and resin from front to back. Lasting resin finish.
