Samuel Adams Latitude 48 Ahtanum IPA is brewed with only Ahtanum hops, a newer variety from the Yakima Valley area of WA. The hops are added at three points during the brewing process -- bittering, late kettle and dry hopping. Ahtanum hops contribute a balanced and typically "American" orange peel, piney and floral flavor and aroma to this brew, balanced by a slight sweetness and full body from the five different malts.

Light color color and slightly opaque. This is the first time I have heard of this hop. The body does not seem very full, and compared to the others in the series, except the East Kent, this is much lighter in bitterness and qualities I commonly associate with an American IPA. Mild malts. Lightly hopped. Very drinkable for sure, at the expense of intense flavor or aroma. It tastes and smells fine, but there is not a lot going on.

12 oz bottle. Again pours a clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma consists of caramel, with hops contributing grapefruit, grassy, and pine aromas. Flavor has a sweetish honey caramel maltiness, grassy hops, some pine and spicy hops, and a lightly bitter finish. Not bad. I have to say, all these single-hop Latitude 48s have been quite nice. This isn’t the best of them, but it’s still good stuff.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a dark cream colored head. Earth and caramel aroma with pine and grapefruit. Pine and earth flavor with grapefruit. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Pine and earth lingers with grapefruit.

So, I’ve tasted a few of these latitudes and find very little difference in any, just subtle. This one seems to have a little creamier head. Smell is not quite as strong as the rest. It seems to have a creamy olfactory which is unique to this brew. Not quite as bitter at first then it sets in after the slug. Perhaps not as strong in the hop arena as the others. This makes it a little more acceptable to this lager lover. Some what difficult on the finish. This one is a little less oily than the zuess, hal and east kent.

Part of the deconstructed 12 pack. Pours a deep amber color with a frothy white head that sticks around for a bit before impaling itself to the sides of the glass. Smells of hop flowers mixed with a bit of caramel and bread. Light hints of apricot and citrus in the aroma as well. Taste is much the same as the aroma. A bready caramel base with hints of floral earthy hops and hints of fruit. Sweet bubbly mouthfeel with a medium body and level of carbonation. My first real experience with this hop. I enjoyed this one a bit, its probably my second favorite behind the zeus.

Vertical tasting of all six beers in the Sam Adams Latitude 48 Deconstructed variety pack. 12 oz bottle into shaker. All pour clear copper with medium sized heads. The Ahtanum leaves spiderwebby lace; head collapses after several minutes. Aroma is bread, caramel corn, not much of a hop presence here--maybe a hint of citrus. Taste is bittersweet (the sweetness dominates), lightly tart and a bit meaty. Dry. Carbonation and body are medium; has an oily texture. Drinking 6 of these side by side has made me realize that Latitude 48 isn’t all that great whether the hops included are isolated from each other or combined. This one ranks fifth.

Coppery gold pour with an average sized creamy off-white head. Light malt aroma and soft flowery hops. Moderately bitter flavor with a dryness that’s substantial. The dryness follows all the way into the finish.
