Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt).
We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Poured a clear dark brown with a thin broken light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, light smoke. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light, yet refreshing, malt liqourice bitter smoke chocolate hop palate. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle at Craig’s. Pours dark brown, quite sweet, not too smoky, too fizzy though.

22 oz bottle shared. Pours dark with tan coffee cream head. Roasted malt aroma with a little chocolate. This beer has the smoke flavor, which I love, but it’s not too overwhelming. Chocolate malt flavor with a smokey finish that sticks around. Good, unique beer. Really enjoyed this.

Smell of smoke, chocolate. Black colour, dark brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, some licorice. Smokiness very neatly in background. Bitter. Soft carbon, creamy texture, full body.

Bottle: Muddy brown color with a monster of a fluffy brown head. Lots of carbonation and the pour is a waiting game. Nice smokey aroma, mostly campfire smoke. Little else comes through in the flavor, very light cocoa and oak to go with a heavy smoke presence. It’s not harsh, but damn full of smoke.

Huge tan-beige head, dense, over deep dark-brown beer with orange reflections; shards of lace. Smoke, phenolic, wood, woodstainer, charcoal, dark malts. Tar, smoke, bitterish hops, tannines, black chocolate, cypress flavours. Warming up, finish shows some liquorice-like sweetness. Medium bodied; quite slick, even a bit oily; feels well-carbonated. Phenolic, but quite nice smoked porter.

Lovely smoky nose, like a Bamberger. Lovely bacon and smoked salmon-like notes. Pretty black, great tan lacy head. Roasted malts, plus smoke, a bit of dark choco, caramel, and coffee. A bit too light, but great flavors and aromas.
