Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt).
We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

75ml bottle bought at De Molen, shared with DutchDrebus and Joes. Hazy dark brown color. Smells like smoked bacon (reminds me of McDonalds’ NY Crispy). Taste is more soft and lingers for a long time. Taste smoked in the finish.

Small brown head. Deep dark red just barely translucent body with light carbonation. Deep roasty smoky wild berry aroma with licorice notes. Dryish roasty mealy wooden taste with smoky charcoal notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, faintly sharpish mouthfeel. Dry roasty cocos and smoke aftertaste with licorice mealy alcohol notes. Nice, but a little lightweight for what it tries to do. (0.5l bottle, Ølbutikken, Copenhagen.)

Bottle: Literally black, as expected, medium-sized stable tanned head with a little lace; sourish-leathery nose with a touch roasted malt; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied and pretty smooth; lingering roasty and leathery finish, presenting a subtle fruitiness and ending with a light acidity. Good, no doubt, but where is the smoke.....?

Very dark, with a small head that doesn’t last long. As the name says, it’s a kinda roasty, smoked, dark beer. Usually not my favorite style, this one scored pretty high though.

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours black with a beige head that didn’t last. Light bacon smoke aroma. Flavor is relatively light - smoke - but something of non-bitter hop as well. I can imagine chocolate in this. Very nice flavor.

(bottle) Pitch-black coloured hue with a beige medium-sized foamy and stable head. Roast-malty and slightly leathery and subtle fruity aroma with notes of chocolate, vanilla and shy traces of smoke. Bitter-sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderately roasty malty taste with leather, chocolate, a subtle fruity touch and shades of smoke malt towards the bitter and slightly sweet finish including a lasting aftertaste of chocolate and vanilla. Pleasant but a tad thin. 11.V.11
