Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt).
We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Bottle. Huge creamy head with excellent duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are rich roast malt, milk chocolate, smoke, licorice and hops. Nice and smooth with a very oily palate. Great beer.

Bottle shared at Ølbutikken, Copenhagen. Pours a dark brown with a massive beige head. Nice smokey aroma with roasted notes and some dark fruit. Smoke is present in the flavour but seemed toned down giving a better balance. Nice beer but the carbonation is too high.

500ml bottle from Brewdog shop. Poured almost black with a frothy, everlasting beige/brown head. Lots of foam, filled the first glass with foam only.Aroma had smoke, licorice, roasted malt and dark chocolate notes. Smooth, oily mouthfeel. Flavor had bigtime smoke, peat, roasted malt, hops and licorice. Complex, very tasty. Bamberg smoke quite noticeable. Medium bodied. Dry, ashy and roasted finish.

Bottle at Cask & Kitchen. Black with a large offwhite head. Aroma of light smoke, some vanilla. Creamy Dark Roast Flavour that drifts to a long lingering dry bitter palate. Very drinkable, at £15 quid a go focuses the mind.

(bottle) Very dark brown with tiny tan head. Pleasant interesting aroma: candy and cough syrup with good hints of nice woody smoke. Beautiful smooth mouthfilling carbonation with creamy full body makes perfect palate. Rich foretaste of dark malt with raisins an dark chocolate leads to an intense and long lasting finish of dark roast malt and bitter tastes. This pleasant bitterness is not obviously hoppy, more strong black coffee and bitter dark chocolate.

Pours black into an English pint. Tan head with excellent retention recedes leaving scant lacing. Caramel and smoke aromas. Medium bodied and sweet with smoky caramel upfront turning chocolatey in the lasting bitter roast finish.

0.5l bottle from BrewDog web shop. This is one black beer with a slowly fading sidesticking tanned head. Aroma has lots of sweet and smoky notes. There's wood, smoke, chocolate, nuts, roasted malts and some sweet dark caramel hints. Quite nice. Really lively, almost aggressive carbonation, it's medium-bodied and has a fizzing light oily to watery mouthfeel. Lots of smoke also in the flavor. Chocolate, roasted malts and also some hints of licorice in the lasting smoky and quite dry finish. The aftertaste is leaving my mouth light bitter and full of smoke. A nice and light drinkable beer.

Black with a mammoth and slightly annoyingly large head. Aroma is smoky, salted ham, light roasted malts, cocoa. Flavor is smoked malts, salted, ham, caramel, and a hint of chocolate. Pretty decent smoke.
