Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt).
We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

500ml bottle. Clear dark brown with huge, firm, lasting, foamy, beige head. Decent smoke aroma, surely some flavours stay stuck in the head. Taste is also smokey, slightly sweet chocolately dark malt notes. Fizzy carbonation takes away much of the taste.

Bottle from Beers of Europe, consumed at ’Chill in the Garden’, Kidlington, Oxon Saturday 4th August 2012 Dark brown with a beige head in fact this a real gusher, it foams and foams, seems very keen to depart the bottle. There are a couple of dark flecks in and amongst the huge pillow of beige foaminess. Smokey nose, but not as sausage smokey as a Scherlenka. Decent smokiness in mouth along with some tangy sour liqourice and dark bitter chocolate. Really nice smokey porter, but that said this is not the best that i’ve had from this brewery. 500ml bottle

Batch 55, BBE Dec 13 - Pours dark brown, almost black with a massive foamy head. Strange aroma of tar, smoke, burnt leather, ash, sour berries and yeast. Taste is quite unique and a bit strange with some roasted malts mixed with a lot of berries and smoked notes with burnt leather and hints of sour berries. FInish is smooth and roasty with some smoked notes. Unbalanced and quite messy.

50 cl bottle @ home. Batch #55: BBE 12/2013
Lots of foaming when pouring. Really weird aroma for a smoked porter; slightly sweet with hay, hints of peat, fruits and vegetables. Flavour has vanilla, peat, some ash and salty licorice. Also some vegetable‐like savor I find hard to describe. Very foamy palate. At the end of the glass this started to feel a bit sour and contaminated.

Weird and not good. I wonder if the bottle was ok?

Purchased at Hop City in Altanta, GA; enjoyed in my hotel room while getting some work done. Appearance is black with a dark brown glow near the rim of the glass, creamy off white/tan head that laces to the glass. Aroma of rich chocolate, nuts, bit of lactose, very very light smoke, smells nice but more like a stout. Taste gives off a little more smoke but I wouldn’t call this a smoked porter, more like a robust light stout? It’s pretty damn good regardless, happy to have tried it.

(Bottle, 0.5 l, at Oluttupa Viisi Penniä, 20120606) The beer poured almost black and clear. Its head was quite large and light brown. Aroma had smoke, tar, roasted malts and liquorice. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were smoke, tar, smoked ham, roasted malts, sweetness, hops and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty, burnt, smoky and bitter. The smokedness was very strong but it worked quite well but the underlying beer could have been a bit more flavourful.

Bottled 500ml (Beer Hunters)
Dark brown color, big cloudy beige-brown head. Wet wood, smoke in the aroma. Medium-bodied. Cellary flavor, wood, light smoke and tar. Crisp carbonation. Is this in good condition? Tastes like some odd Danish brew.

Bottle. Huge creamy head with excellent duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are rich roast malt, milk chocolate, smoke, licorice and hops. Nice and smooth with a very oily palate. Great beer.
