Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Keg @ Canalhouse, Notts. Pours hazy gold with white head. Thick hoppy aroma. Fruity hoppy taste with apricot, pine, orange and a sticky resin finish. Decent.

Keg @ Canalhouse, Nottingham. Dark gold, just a little bit hazy with some white head. Apricot and fenugreek aroma, fruity yet a bit savoury. Taste starts with a sweetness, followed by a heavy but not overbearing bitter hop flavour. Dry, almost sour, apricotty finish. This is properly pleasant stuff.

Bottle from StarmoreBoss, Sheffield. Hazy gold. Film of clingy white head. Fusty orange (I’m getting a lot of this, tonight. Maybe I’m getting fusty?). It’s got the Simcoe thing, too. Taste is dry, and skunky, fresh bitterness. Dry palate. Light chew. Chewy, lemon bitter finish. Decent.

Draught @ Akkurat. A mal dominated IPA that is way too sweet. There are also some disturbing and non fitting bready notes. Very bitter. Notes of grapefruit and herbs.

12 fl oz bottle. Dark golden in the glass, light unclear, a lot of CO 2 perls. Small foamy head. Flowers and honey on the nose. Starts sweet herb. A lot of hop, also malt in the background, less fruity. A little bit bitter dry at the end.

Bottle from Toft vin, Copenhagen - amber pour with white head. Very sweet fruity and malty aroma and taste, caramel, light toffee, hoppy but kind of messy and undefined. Ok.

Ugly, opaque gold with heavy sediment (due to unfiltered nature as stated on the label). Not your regular hoppy citrusy IPA. Straw, grass, bitter. Full-bodied finish.
