Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

12 ounce bottle. Bright amber orange color. Small bubbly white head. Grassy hop bouquet with a nutty malt backdrop. Big bitter hop smack in the face upfront. Seems a bit out of balance. All hops and little malt.

12 oz. bottle, thanks to Ian. Pours a slightly, hazy orange, with a small, bubbly head. The aroma is butterscotch, grapefruit, rye, and honey. Very bitter, sweet, and a little off. Medium body, astringent, and grainy. Overall, this is a bitter, slightly off-putting IPA. Apparently, this is a little old, but it still holds up pretty well.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein oranges Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr malzig, hopfig fruchtig, bitter. Geschmack intensiv fruchtig hopfig, stark malzig.

Lemony citrus aroma dominates this beer. Pours clear orange with great head and lacing. Finishes bitter and a little sour. Comes together well, though it’s all hops. Soft carbonation. Tap at Churchkey.

12oz bottle from Georgio’s, Billerica, MA. A hazy amber pour with lots of floaters and a thin cream head; malty aroma; citrus taste with a long grapefruit finish. A rather average IPA.

Bottle. Pours a hazy deep gold with a good foamy head. Grassy/Herbal nose. Taste is bitter hops with a strong malt backbone. Full bodied with a lingering bitterness. Not my favorite hop profile; no citrus, no pine, just big & bitter.

Bottle. Orange barley malt and orange peel aroma. Hazy golden yellow with large head. Sweet earthy orange malt and moderately bitter orange peel flavor. Nice balance. Very good.

Draft at Reno’s East, East Lansing. Clearish straw orange body, thick puffy beige head. Sweet nose with candies and herbal notes. Nice, complex body, toasty, cerealy, and nutty with grassy hops and soft, dusty yeast that lends a bread dough-like quality to the beer. Loses some of its punch after a few sips.

Bottle. Hazy amber liquid with medium white head. Aroma of citrus, bread, biscuit, toast, grapefruit, flowers, earth and light dried fruit. Taste is dry and medium bitter with notes of grapefruit, bread, toast and citrus. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Quite nice.
