2011 winner created by Joe Formanek. For the past 15 years, Joe has been brewing his Russian Imperial Stout. This malt-forward brew has a rich complexity, with roasty and chocolate notes, yet enough hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness. This satisfying winter brew is full-bodied with an enjoyable velvety smoothness.

Bottle @ home. Pours a deep black appearance with a dark brown head. Burnt, roasty, chocolate malty, a bit woody/vegetal, light vanilla aroma. Fairly roasty dark chocolate malty flavor with some anise, vanilla, and charred wood notes. Fairly roasty finish. Overall, ok.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Colonial Wine and Spirits, 4/2/12, from the Long Shot 6 pack

Aroma: The nose has roasted malts, some bread/toast, dark chocolate, a little spice, and hints of fruit
Appearance: Pours a black color, like motor oil, with a creamy foam of brown head and mid-heavy lacing
Flavor: Tastes lightly sweet, heavy roasted/chocolate, with a mid-bitter finish and some light alcohol notes
Palate: The body is fairly full and extremely creamy, with a hint of heat, and a light dryness to the finish
Overall Impression: This was a pretty solid one. It had a nice complexity to the flavor, and there's some interesting balance for the style. This one was rather thick too, with a motor oil pour and smooth feel. Overall, this was a pretty nice attempt at the style, and a good homebrew.

12 ounce bottle. Pours clear very dark brown such that little light permeates it. Large dark brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, toasted notes and piney hops. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, a tart note, cocoa and a hoppy finish. Medium bodied. Nice.

Bottle. Cinnamon, chocolate malt aroma - kind of like a cinnamon roll. Oil black with thin brown head. Sweet chocolate malt, cinnamon, and moderately bitter herbal hops and light astringency. Smooth. Nice, drinkable beer.

Dark black pour with one of the darkest tan heads I have ever seen - nose of sweet cream, bitter chocolate, cocoa, light char - creamy mouthfeel - fairly sweet up front, with vanilla and chocolate notes - gets a little spicy through the middle, with some peppery alcohol - notes of anise arrive late, some char, a leathery notes - a little sweet, but follows some of e profile of the classic examples of the style - a pretty good brew.

Pours a solid black with a decent sized tan head that leaves moderate lace. Smells of licorice, dark fruits, smoke, acridic coffee, a bit of caramel. Taste is quite sweet with lots of dark fruits coming through as well as lots of anise and caramel. Medium to thick body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel. This one reminds me a lot of the regular Sam Adams imperial stout. Its thick and tasty but its missing the heavy roasted grain presence that should be there for the style.

Pours black into a Sam glass. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Chocolate, vanilla and sour pit fruit aromas. Medium bodied with espresso and metallic chocolate upfront turning to mild charred pot fruit in the lasting finish.
