2011 winner created by Joe Formanek. For the past 15 years, Joe has been brewing his Russian Imperial Stout. This malt-forward brew has a rich complexity, with roasty and chocolate notes, yet enough hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness. This satisfying winter brew is full-bodied with an enjoyable velvety smoothness.

12oz bottle pours very dark with dark brown edges and dark mocha colored head of foam. The aroma has dark roasted malts, dusty malt balls, a little bit of dark chocolate and some dark fruity esters. The taste hits with a mix of dark chocolate, dark roasted malts and dark chocolate malt balls. To midway and into the finish it picks up a bit of black strap molasses and a mild level of sweet dark fruity esters. Pretty tasty stuff with a pleasing chocolate and malt ball sensation.

Flavors are of roast, chocolate, iodine, alcohol. Somewhat bitter, possibly too bitter. Medium high viscosity, full bodied, low carbonation and slightly warming.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a medium beige head. The aroma is roasted malt and chocolate. Medium mouthfeel with a rich chocolate and roast with a bitter finish. Alcohol present but not overpowering a very good imperial stout.

Big dense black pour that throws up a tall, mocha colored head. The aroma has roast malts, espresso and chocolate. The flavor is well balanced between the roasty sweet malts and the hop bitterness. Good and solid, not too over the top.

Rated at the 2012 RB Pgh May tasting. Typical imp stout smells, not bad. Big & black fer sure. Bitter flavors from the start. Way over the top. If you like imp stout, try this. Ceratinly on style and same with the big bitter finish.

12 oz bottle. Pitch black with fast departing tan head. Not much retention. Basic nose of milk chocolate and roasted malt. The taste is much richer than I expected. The flavor has a lot of chocolate and roasted malt, as well as an aspect of smoke. I can detect a faint bitterness as the stout warms. The mouthfeel has a creamy texture to it, yet drying in the finish. ABV is masked pretty well. People may review this as a “basic” Impy Stout however, I really appreciate the brewers recipe and dedication to this brew. I enjoyed it.

Bottle. Lovely looking beer with thick beige head, much lacing. Faint aroma, peaty and malty. Full bodied, chocolate, malt and roast with a chocolate cherry note. Lingering malty finish. Doesn’t taste boozy

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours black with about a half finger of dark brown head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate with a hint of caramel. Taste is medium bitter. Heavily coffee and dark chocolate with a little caramel and milk chocolate on the end. Medium-full bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, pretty good. I wouldn’t mind getting a whole 6-pack of this.

Pour is a dark black with a large tan head. Aroma is roasted malt and licorice. Flavor is roasted malt but not over the top like most imps stouts. Also I did not get any hops. It’s a nicely roasted beer but not the best of its kind. No real hops and nothing going on after the malts. This years longshot six pack was heavy on the malty side
