22oz bottle with purple/lavender wax. 2011? Aroma is full of caramel notes with some toasted bread, toffee and a light roast character. Some burnt sugar and hints of honey. Light citrus and pine hoppiness, but the hops have mostly faded. Light alcohol spice. Pours a somewhat cloudy, copper and amber with a small tan head that quickly disappears. Faint lacing and long legs. Flavor has a moderate sweetness with lots of caramel and toffee. Some light treacle notes. Moderate toasted bread and nuttiness. Hints of roast and smoke. Moderate bitterness with light citrus and pine resin; again the hops have really faded. Light honey notes in the finish along with hints of alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall a really nice barleywine that has asked really well. I like the way the malt character had integrated and the heart had faded. I’m not a fan of super hoppy barleywines so the she had helped in that way too. Oxidation is only showing hints of honey.

5/IV/14 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle @ home - BB: n/a, 2008 vintage (2014-342) Thanks to Adam Jackson for the bottle!

Saved it for my 100th Barley Wine rating, was not disappointed! :-) Clear orange beer, creamy off-white head, little stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: sweet, orange peel, floral, some dried fruits, sugary. MF: soft to no carbon, full body. Taste: sweet sugary start, very fruity, citrus, dried fruits, bit of honey, little bitter. Aftertaste: honey, sugary touch, floral, nice piny bitterness, citrus, some vanilla.

Rerateed 26.02.2014, 0,65l bottle (blue wax, blood fresh 2014 edition) sampled @ MAD Beer Brewing release @ Mielcke & Hurtigkarl:
Small slightly bubbly mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly fresh fruity, hop pellets, newly cut lawn, leafs, citrus peel, hints of pine needles. Taste is slightly concentrated fresh grassy, hop pellets, leafs, grass, pine needles, caramel malts, sap, dried fruits. Medium to longlasting bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel. Nice enough, way too fresh for a barleywine, and maybe more in the triple IPA direction as it is now. (Rerated from 11.05.2012, tap @ CBC).

2013 vintage Golden Amber / red Nose is loaded with Tobacco and super spicy peppercorn. Very bitter beer….like this was once a hop bomb and just faded and very intensely chewy. A lot of very biscuity and loaded with tobacco and cloves. Too intense actually in sweetness, caramel and tons of spice.

22 oz. bottle that is one year old. Hazy Amber color with decent level of carbonation. Lace down the side of the glass. Nose is Crystal malts, toffee, orange spice and tobacco leaves. Flavor is much the same with plenty of bitterness. Tobacco leaves mixed with toffee and caramel. Level of bitterness is real high. I guess it should sit a bit longer. Not buying into the hype on this one.

22 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass; Fall 2011 Ohio bottling with yellow wax. Pours slightly cloudy reddish orange color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big caramel, grapefruit, orange zest, orange rind, tangerine, toast, toffee, raisin, pear, floral, grass, pine, brown sugar, and floral/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange zest, caramel, tangerine, toast, floral, brown sugar, raisin, pear, light pine, grass, and floral/toasted earthiness. Light earthy floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, caramel, toast, brown sugar, pear, raisin, floral, light pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome balance and complexity of hop and malt flavors; with a nice bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent barleywine style. All around great balance and complexity of malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering as expected.

From a 22 oz bottle shared on the road in South Carolina. Pours a hazy amber with a massive creamy off white head. Sweet hoppy aroma. Flavors of caramel and some grassy hops. Really nicely put together. Tasty.
