Spelt Saison

GOLDEN HOUR is the light at the end of the tunnel. Following in the authentic tradition of Belgian saisons, ours is dry and spritzy with a billowy white head of Belgian lace. For local terroir, we use spelt grown in Upstate NY and malted by our friend Andrea Stanley at Valley Malt. With its subtle nutty flavor, the spelt combines beautifully with the spiciness of our favorite farmhouse yeast and the refined, pungent aromas of German Tettnang and Hallertau hops. Golden Hour is a beer for those seeking respite from the winter doldrums.

Tasting at Matt’s
Murky blond color, small head, not inviting. Fruity aroma, sour. Overly carbonated; extreme astringent flavor, dirty, yeasty, with excessive bitterness, covering any fruity character.
Dirty and almost undrinkable.

Bottle - Light soured pale malts. Cloudy yellow gold. Sweet and lightly tart ale, some light fruity esters and banana. Not bad.

750mL bottle, pours a cloudy pale golden orange with a medium white head. Aroma brings out farmhouse notes, yeast, and dry floral notes. Flavour is earthy and yeasty, with farmhouse yeast, thick yeast soup and more yeast. Sounds bad as I describe it, but it's rather nice. Dry, earthy and yeasty finish. Nice stuff.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Pours a very hazy, almost whitish golden with a white head. Aroma is slight funk with fruitiness and strange grains. I don’t really know what spelt is supposed to be about, but this comes off as a nice saison with small amounts of funk, but a hefty amount of fruitiness, with just a bit of spice.
