Nearly twenty years ago, a local farmer stopped by our brew pub looking to sell his truck full of wild Maine blueberries, providing the inspiration for our Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale. That year our beer debuted at the first-ever Maine Brewer’s Festival where it was enthusiastically received. This brew stands alone as a beer first, ending with a subtle berry finish. Unlike many fruit beers on the market, which are imbalanced with sweetness our amber ale isn’t overly fruity—just enough berry flavor to complement the hops.

Hazy, murky orange body, medium off-white head. Blueberry aroma is a bit stronger than in other similar beers I’ve sampled. Tart blueberry body with little else of note. That said, the blueberry flavor in this beer seems to be more fully-developed than in other examples I’ve tried. I’m a fan of blueberries, but they have a very limited, predictable role in beer.

Bottle. Rich amber color with a big off-white head. Just a touch of blueberry aroma and malt. Fruit and malf flavor, but not refreshing in taste. Slight astringency and harshness.

A nice pour with a dark brown colour, with a great white head. The beer was definately darker than I assumed, and a welcomed sign. The smell was almost that of a fresh-baked blueberry muffin. The taste was initially blueberry -- pretty strongly, I may add-- then faded off to just a plain malt taste in short time. Not too much depth to this beer, but definately not a bad beer...and most likely a better choice than the BluCreek Blueberry Ale, if you've had that?

What the hell is this? It tastes like something a corporate brewery would make but attempt to disguise as "microbrewed" by giving it some lame name. Odd mix of hops and blueberries in both the aroma and flavor that I don't think work well together. Kind of like and APA and fruit beer combined. I suppose it's not horrible, but for a brewery that makes something as good as coal porter, I'd have to call this one a disappointment.

[I]re-rate, May 2008[/i][BR]Kind of a blue-tinted amber colour. The aroma has lots of blueberry. Well-balanced on the palate. Lots of blueberry but also a firm caramelly, earthy maltiness. THe blueberry comes up with a fresh, fruity sweetness at the end that I really like.[BR][BR]Original rate: Orangey-amber candied blueberry, caramel and earthy malt aroma cuminy, musty flavours. I’m sorry for using such an obscure reference, but this tastes exactly like the Karma Co-op food store smells - from the spiderwebs to the flax seed and all that organic stuff - it’s a dead ringer. Interesting stuff, restrained blueberry. 6 3 7 4 14 is equal to 3.4
