Nearly twenty years ago, a local farmer stopped by our brew pub looking to sell his truck full of wild Maine blueberries, providing the inspiration for our Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale. That year our beer debuted at the first-ever Maine Brewer’s Festival where it was enthusiastically received. This brew stands alone as a beer first, ending with a subtle berry finish. Unlike many fruit beers on the market, which are imbalanced with sweetness our amber ale isn’t overly fruity—just enough berry flavor to complement the hops.

12 oz bottle. Crystal clear copper color (cccc) with weak off white head. Aroma of faint malts, blueberry and tartness. First taste is sweet blueberry then sweet caramel malts then berry tartness and subtle hop hints. The flavors are well balanced with malts and berries. There is an even berry aftertaste that isn’t too tart or too sweet.

Pours dark amber into a pint glass. Bright blueberry aromas -- hand picked -- smells great. Very slight blueberry quickly turns bitter in the lighthouse style. Very nice for a blueberry.

Considering how famous Maine is for its wild blueberries, it’s no surprise that a Bar Harbor brewery would concoct a blueberry ale. I would think the temptation would be to brew an ultra-sweet fruit ale for the tourist trade. This beer is sweet alright, but not overly so. In fact, it’s very nicely balanced presenting a wonderful aroma of blueberries, caramel and toffee atop spicy hops. The pour was copper with an average white head. Medium body with average carbonation. The flavor is sweet, but yields to a moderately bitter aftertaste. Clean and crisp in the finish.

Copperish color with a minimal head that (unless my eyes are playing tricks) has a slightly blue coloration. Aroma is overwhelmingly of blueberries... but almost an artificial blueberry smell. Flavor is a bit watery/weak on the backside, but the blueberry flavor adds nicely to the mix of hops and malt. Could be a bit fuller, but still develops nicely and is blended well.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a small head. Overwhelming aroma of blueberry. Flavor is that of a lager with some blueberry... not bad, and in fact got used to it by the time the 6-pack was gone.

Draught. Was a clear orange color with a decent white head that bubbled off quickly. Aroma was mostly of fresh blueberries with some citrus and sweet frutis as well. Flavor of blueberry and light citrus, ratrher sweet but still drinkable. Ends a little bitter. Has a crisp and refreshing mouth. Pretty decent.

This is a nice light beer. Its got a blueberyy flavor but it is not strong. Can smell the blueberries. Not much past that. Pours with a little bit of head and an amber color. The beer is clear, can see right through to the other side.

Bottle. Sweet blueberry muffin malt aroma. Reddish brown with next to no head. Lightly sweet with strong blueberry flavor and moderate malt. Gives you a strong blueberry flavor without being cloying. Quite nice for a fruit beer.

This is the first time that I have ever encountered this beer or this brewer. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a caramel color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is strong with real blueberry scent. The flavor is strong with real blueberry notes and a moderate underlying malt presence. The beer gives you a real nice fruit flavor while avoiding being too sweet. There is a light brown sugar flavor in the finish.
