Oddland Series #02: Spiced Pear Ale

Draught @ Elysian Brewing, Seattle, WA

Pours clear yellowish golden with a white head. Aroma of pear, spices, citrus and fruits. Taste is very spicy and fruity with some pear juicy notes and caramom. Finish is spicy and fruity with some sweet juicy pear notes. The spices don’t quite fit in here, feels quite strange.

Pours gold with a fading head.Nose shows some mix of cardamon, cumin, nutmeg, cloves or star anise along with a hint of baked pears. Not sure about the savoury cumin-like character.More cardamon as a flavour along with a harsh, herbal astringency. Very little supporting malt and the aggressive bitterness clashes with the spices.Carbonation is too high.

Odd....OK, well anyway odd beer. On tap at Orenco Taphouse. A spicy fruity nose. The flavor almost seems to have some cedar, a bit of pepper, lemons, medium spicy hops, banana and honey. Interesting.

Aroma: The nose is full of Asian spices (ginger, white pepper, and 5 spice) and, of course, pear
Appearance: It pours a hazed golden color with a small white head and some drippy lace
Flavor: The flavor is heavily spiced like the nose, with some medium fruity sweetness
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a tingly, spicy feel, plus carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: First rating of December might as well be another In a long line of Asian spiced pear flavored beers. Boy is this a played out style. Seriously though, I love the creativity here. What a unique and awesome experiment. As a beer it is good, although it may not be my absolute favorite, but conceptually, I'm a huge fan.

Tap at stags head finishing up strangest beer flight. Pours hazy golden with sweetband spicy nose. Tastes of candied pears, white pepper, coriander, floral, and blue cheese. Odd tasting and pretty sweet with artificial flavored finish.

On tap at Craft Beer Market Vancouver, pours a cloudy golden orange with a medium white head. Aroma of strong spices upfront, followed by pear. Flavour brings out more of the pear upfront, followed by medium spiciness. Well-integrated, just not a big fan of the combination. Decent.

22oz bottle. Poured a clear, slightly hazy golden color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was notes of spices (corriander, cumin), some banana and sweet pear notes. Flavor was notes of spices, some light sweet fruit notes, with some dry honey character. Interesting.

Bottle. Pours orange gold with white head. Nose and taste of herbs, spices, pear skin, orange and lemon peel, lemongrass and light earth. Medium body. Real nice beer if you like spice/herbs.

Tap at OBF. Pours hazy dark gold with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of pear and asian spice. Med body. Flavor of pear with lots of cardamom - and maybe a slight Thai/Indian flavor. Different and very drinkable.
