Imperial Extra Double Stout is regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout of 9.0% ABV.

Bottle from Beer Hawk - Jet black body, thick firm lasting beige head. Nose is a winey, sweet balsamic vinegar, lots of fruit and a bit of smoke. Mouthfeel is great - meringue like - nice robust and oily. Taste is a strange sweet and sour mix, but in a good way, with a boozy warmth going down. Very nice and enjoyable IRS.

1999 Vintage shared at the Taster’s Choice gathering. Thick black liquid with a faint tan head that disappears almost instantly. Sharp raspberry lactic tartness with hints of oxidation and band aid like phenols. Light ashy roasty aroma barely makes it through the other smells. The flavor follows the aroma. Light sherry and sharp fruity flavors with some wet cardboard held together with band aids. Light caramel and ashy roast flavor round it out. Medium to thin body with a thin layer of carbonation. I’ve heard its a crap shoot whether you get a nicely aged bottle of this or not. Unfortunately we drew the short straw here. I will re-rate if I find a better example of this brew.

2009. Pour is a thick crude oil black with no head at all. Aroma is berry like with some sugar, sweet malt and alcohol. Flavor is vinous with sour grapes and sweet molasses malts. Finish leaves a thick coating of the malt with the aftertaste of marzipan. This was different and weird, I have been holding on to this for a while. Good to try and pass around but don’t think I need a newer vintage.

bottle from Noble Wines Tunbridge Wells. Deep black, beige head. Lovely aroma of roasetd malts and caramel, coffee. Full-bnodied, intensivbely malty with lots of caramel, chocolate, cocoa, coffee... lingering dark malty finish. Delicious!

Bottle at Dean’s night before the night tasting, Den Haag courtesy of Worldbeertaste. The aroma is big Brett, malt, slightly sour caramel. There is a lot going on here. The flavour is medium bitter, very light sour with a watery liqourice bitter vinous palate. Medium bodied with flat carbonation. Has an oily mouthfeel with a a long bitter finish.

Bottle shared on the night before the night tasting. Pours near black with a biege head. Aroma of Brett upfront, real overwhelming barnyard (is it supposed to be this way?) with some roast behind. Flavour is over moderate sweet and moderate bitter. Caramel, chocolate and roasty stout qualities coming out in the palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

From a bottle at Pizzeria Paradisio in Old Town VA. Pours a clear almost black with a thin bubbly tan head. Aroma of dark cherry and plums. Flavors of chocolate and licorice. A bit salty and with a slightly tart finish.

Cask at Great British Beer Festival 2013. Poured a thick black colour with a thin head of light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt with soy sauce and marmite notes. Coffee flavours with dark chocolate and liquorice. Finishes with Oxo, black syrup and burnt toast. Pretty good, but a bit on the sweaty cask side. Definitely better in bottle.

2008 vintage. 9.3 oz bottle poured in snifter. Black/brown with small head. This has a very unique taste that put me off at first but I enjoyed it because it tasted so different. Sweet and sour, hint of soy, funky roasted malt.
