Cask at GBBF 2013, Olympia, London. A black coloured pour with a small beige head on top. Roasty, malty, soy sauce aroma. Tastes is similar, roasty, malty, soy, a little coffee and chocolate. Not bad but lacking in complexity.

2008.

Gorgeous black colour, good +1" head of foam, lacing is pretty spectacular.

The smell is roasty, lots of chocolate, big notes of Brett, light aroma of tartness.

Chocolate and tartness up front in the taste, licorice, Brett flavours, and roasted malt. It kind of sounds like a mess, eh?, but to my palate, it is hitting on all cylinders.

Smooth and creamy full body with ample carbonation.

Just a damn treat to drink. 9%abv, 9.3 oz bottle.

275 ml bottle sampled in 2008. Black body with a really small beige head. Aroma of dark, roasted malt, dry fruit, soy, cellar notes and warming alcohol. Flavor is sweet, dark malt, slightly burnt, balanced bitterness, dry fruit, liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee, slightly acidic berries and warming alcohol. Full body and strong aftertaste. A really complex beer.

Bottle at home. Really rich Madeira cake aroma with caramel figs. A little booze but subdued. Really dark caramel black colour dark tan head. Legs, viscous. Flavour is deep and rich soft caramel, smooth coffee notes, figs and cake. Some alcohol heat, but generally hides it well. This really is very good. Palete is perfectly carbed semi sweet

Bottle: 1999 label Pours used-oil black, no head. Aroma is dark, blackberry jam, bubble gum. Taste is sweet-sour...wine like and slightly acidic....blackberry and licorice. More vinegary/bitter as it warms. Interesting...whether it’s the beer itself or the age, I don’t know....fairly complex taste....I like it.

Bottle at home. It pours near black with thick tan head. The nose is roasted malt, rich coffee, chocolate gateaux, dark fruit, plum, wood and jam. The taste is roasted malt, burnt earth, charcoal, coffee, alcohol warmth, wood, tangy dark fruit, jam, wood, salted liquorice and varnish with a warming bitter-sweet finish. Full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Good depth of flavour. An accomplished brew indeed.
