Originally brewed in 2005 as the first in our annual decadance series, AleSmith Olde ale follows the tradition of classic British-style old ales. This rich, multi-forward ale showcases soft notes of currents and dried fruit along with complex dark sugars, all of which are balanced by a subtle bitterness derived from the addition of traditional English hops. AleSmith Olde ale is ready to be enjoyed now or I can be age for upwards of twenty years to further enhance its amazing depth of flavor. A hearty ale designed to please Bacchus himself.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschbert. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aromas of dark fruits, toasted malts and molasses. Sweet molasses flavor with some caramel and figs. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Another excellent Alesmith brew. Thanks Craig.

Bottle at Brewdog bar, Aberdeen. Pours amber with a ruby highlights and rapidly dissipating beige head. The nose is redcurrants, orange peel, honey, bread, caramel, brown sugar and English hops. The taste is caramel, obvious orange, plenty of dark fruits (raisin, plum, cherry), varnish, cinnamon, clove, wood and vanilla. It’s an interesting beer to share with friends during the colder months of the year.

Bottle kindly shared by Thomas at Merton Winter Beer Festival, thank you Thomas for your generosity 05.02.11 Pours a dark orangey brown I suppose there was some head but I never took any notice. I was convinced that this had some sort of barrel ageing, not that it was strong but there was whisky, wet wood and plenty of spirity vibes in here. Warmth from the alcohol, there is a lovely smooth malty and fruity depth here some vanilla and spice thrown in for good measure. Very nice and the sort of beer that is nice to share, I don’t think I could have had a whole bottle to myself :-) A7 A4 T8 P5 Ov15

Tons of gingerbread, ground coffee beans, cherries, toffee, cherries, moderately sweet, but just the right amount. Cask at the linkery. A touch of whisky in the finish. Unbelievable.

nice old ale reminescent of a wee heavy in its malty sweetness with enough hops to balance it out. color is absolutely perfect, nearly black but with flecks of brown when held into the light. decent tan head that doesnt disspate but leaves a nice lacing on the glass. ful mouthfeel and a lingering malt burn, and really the only criticism is that the malt aftertaste turns into a little bit of a cough medicine flavor. but it is a very good interpretation of the style, very enjoyable.

(Bottle, 0.75 l, at Pikkulintu) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, alcohol and fruit cake. Palate was full bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, sweetness, alcohol, midly roastedness, molasses, hops and btterness. Aftertaste was sweet and bitter. An enjoyable brew in which alcohol was present too much giving the beer a harsh flavour. Ageing would quite like improve the beer.

Bottle: Poured a slightly cloudy amber color ale with a large frothy head with good retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt with residual sugar notes and lightly dry fruits notes. Taste is a great balanced mix between some dry fruits and caramel malt with light residual sugar. This one almost taste like an English barleywine and hops do not play a dominant roles. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed and more balanced then most other beers form this brewer.

Bottled 750ml @Pikkulintu
Dark red color, small steady beige head. Caramel, vanilla, liquer, banana (!) in the aroma. Full-bodied. Quite alcoholic. Roasted, ryeish maltyness, some chocolate, vanilla. Typical strong barley wine. Too rough, needs ageing.
