India Pale Ale Brewed with Elderberries & Coriander
Collaborators: Kyle Hollingsworth, Homebrewer & Keyboardist for The String Cheese Incident / Keri Kelli, Rocker & Publican / Mitch Steele, Brewmaster, Stone Brewing Co.
We all enjoy turning things up to 11, and that is represented in this collaborative offering, an imperial India pale ale ably backed by Nugget, Comet and Calypso hops and amplified care of a healthy dry-hopping with Australian hop Vic Secret, adding citrus and tropical fruit oomph. To give this modern masterpiece some soulful, classic character, we traced the roots of brewing to the days when Old World herbs were used to spice beers and added coriander and elderberries. To stand up to that sumptuous spice and blaring bitterness, we included golden naked oats, which are lightly roasted and bring body and enhanced mouthfeel to the beer like a steady, unbreakable backbeat to an incendiary solo.
Developing this beer with two professional musicians from such different backgrounds was a fun and unique experience. Besides loving to play music, the three of us also share a common love for craft beer, so we were all excited to combine music and brewing. The jam sessions with Team Stone after each brew day were awesome, and it was an honor to share the βstageβ with Kyle and Keri. The historic throwback of using elderberries to spice the beer, in addition to hops, was an interesting choice and makes this beer distinct and unique.

Light amber color. Big pine, spicy, caramel nose. The mouth is very big lots of pine and grapefruit. Full on, though not overly complex. Still decent beer.

Bottle Shared by Mick. 9.3% a clear golden orange gold with a a thin beige head. Very fruity, grapefruit, a bit of sharp green pine, some slight dankness in the nose. Medium bodied with a bit of a sandy feeling carbonation. Bitter, very green, pine, grapefruit with a big puckering finish. Looks nice but isnβt worth the fairly high cost in Japan, somewhat bitter and unbalanced. No noticeable berry or coriander notes. Not bad per se just disappointing. good enough but it had none of the complexity I was expecting.

22oz bomber pours with a clear copper body that has thin gold edges and supports a light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up grapefruit, tangelo, some mild mango notes and then pleasing earthy tea and spicy nearly dank hops going on in the background. The taste is similar to the aroma where I get bright and rich and deep notes of grapefruit, tangelo, mango and then a grounding earthy tea goodness that provides a frame of reference for the citrusy and tropical juicy hop explosions that are going on. This is just juicy and rich and bitter and flavorful and bitter with hops. Wow! I love it. The 9% ABV is big and well hidden away in the depths. I need more of this. Wow!

Draft - Peach, Passionfruit and sweet grapefruit. Hazy gold with a good beige head. Resinous with some pine and bitter grapefruit. Not nearly as juicy as it smells.

Pours deep gold into a tulip. White head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Resin and summer berry aromas. Hot and dry with sweet caramel and citrus upfront turning to resin in the medium length finish

Bottle from colonial spirits Pours a fairly clear golden orange color with a decent sized foamy off white head that dissipates a bit too quickly. Aromas of onion and pepper with a bit of caramel and alcohol, and a touch of non descript fruitiness. I got a faint hint of gin when I first set my nose over it, but I canβt find it now. The flavor is bready and caramel sweet malt up front, but that is almost instantly terrorized by and onslaught of green onion and resin. A light bit of black pepper comes through and only adds to the spiciness of the hop flavor. There is a light fruitiness in there but the sheer power of the other flavors just overwhelmed it. Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a resinous mouthfeel. Big strong willed beer that I really enjoyed sipping on most of the night.

22 ounce bottle. Hazy amber orange color with a thick rocky beige head. Big citrus hops in nose with notes of pine and coriander. Big bitter hop flavor upfront. Black pepper and mustard seed come to mind. Toasted malt takes a backseat to the huge hop bill here. There is a slight tanginess in the mid taste that I associate to the sourness of the elderberries. The finish is mostly dry with an obvious grapefruit peel nuance. The 9.2% ABV is subdued but shows up in the warming swallow.

Cloudy gold with a reserved off-white head. The aroma is sweet candy malt and alcohol. Some spicy herbal notes a it warms. The flavor is balanced between the sweetness and the bitterness. Some dryness and an herbal finish. I never detected any elderberries so I would attribute everything unusual to the coriander and the hop bill.
