Again, the basic old and young lambic are matured in oak casks. But here we add to one year-old lambic about 400 grams of real cherries per litre. This creates a second fermentation in the casks. Oude Kriek Boon then undergoes a further fermentation in the bottle and has an alcohol volume of 6.5%. After several months, the flavour has matured to the desired taste.
Oude Kriek Boon is a test of your patience. It should lie about 2 years in the bottle. At first, it tastes of fruit, especially sour cherries. Oude Kriek Boon eventually evolves into a deep taste reminiscent of Port or Madeira wine. This is kriek at its best.

2008 vintage from Tanakaya. Poured into a snifter. Clear plum red color with no head. Dark cherry notes along with some wood, almond and mint also present. Very little to no carbonation present. Taste is very well-balanced between lightly sweet and lightly sour. Starts off fruity and mildly sweet on the palate with the cherry really standing out. As it goes down it picks up a mild sour tone. Finishes bone dry with some nice tannin like quality. Wonderful at this age.

Rating from old notes. The traditional, more ’genuine’ edition of the popular Boon Kriek, unsweetened; deep hazy cherry red beer with crackling, coarse, off-pinkish head. Complex lambic aroma, wood, sour berries, wine vinegar, wet hay, the unmistakable ’horseblanket’ and sherry, all drenched in an overload of sour cherries. Very tart onset, fruity esters (unripe plums, sour berries), tons of ’real’ sour cherries, lemony and lactic acidity nicely intermingled with the sour fruit, lean mouthfeel with firm sparkling, dry finish of tannins (wood and cherry stones), lingering acidity, an echo of earthy hops and basic wheat sourishness, long and appetizing. Exemplary ’oude kriek’ but I’d have to taste it side by side with the Mariage Parfait version, which I thought was even ’fuller’, if my memory does not fail me.

Beautiful blood red appearance with big pink head. Aroma of sour cherries, funk, wood, a little bit metallic, not distracting though. Taste is dry sour cherries, stone (almonds), wood, dry sour finish. High carbonation, needs some time in the glass to settle (just like Mariage Parfait). Lacks a bit of complexity towards the end, but besides that, it?s just a real Oude Kriek, not more to say! I love Oude Krieks ;)

Beautiful dark red color, with nice pin head, lasting quite long. Smell is cherry, wood and some acid. Taste is sour, woody, and of course fruity, everything well balanced, not too sour. Dry mouthfeel. Great thirst quencher.

On tap at Fermentøren, Copenhagen, DK. Unclear deep red with a pink to purple head. The aroma is fruity, cherries, sour yeast. The taste is moderate to high sour first, followed by a hint of sweetness. The palate is rather watery and the fruity finish a bit short.

375ml bottle at home. Dark red brown color with pink head. Aroma is funky fruity, tart cherries, barnyard notes, dusty. Sweet, light bitter and light sour taste like the aroma. Light to medium oily body with average to fizzy carbonation.

375mL bottle, pours a pinkish ruby red with a medium pink head. Aroma brings out lots of cherries and some slight funk. Flavour brings out a nice mix of tart cherries and dry funk - no residual cherries like the regular shitty Boon Kriek. This is a pure authentic one. On the funkiest side for a cherry lambic, which is how I like it. Wonderful stuff.
