Horchata is a traditional, sweet, milky drink originating in Spain and Latin America that has become quite popular in Southern California, particularly with Mexican cuisine. Our take on the traditionally non-alcoholic drink is a blonde ale brewed with a heavy dosing of rice, cinnamon and fresh vanilla beans along with lactose for a little extra creamy character. If you didn't know better, you'd think it was carbonated horchata. The flavor is hard to describe, but for those who know it, you know you love it. This limited edition variation on our seasonal release is spruced with a bit more spice for extra kick.

750ml bottle, 2015 vintage, 11.2% ABV. Pours orange with a tiny head. Aroma of spices, cinnamon, coconut, hints of vanilla and milky notes. Taste is sweetish, spicy and slightly watery with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, milky notes and cinnamon. Finish is spicy, sweetish and creamy with hints of vanilla, cinnamon and toffee. Okay.

750 ml bottle poured into a Bruery tulip. 2015 edition from Reserve Society. Hazy orange with half a finger of quick fading off-white head. Aromas of vanilla, candied bacon, maple syrup. Tastes of vanilla, spices, sweet rice pudding, some maple syrup and brown sugar. Alcohol is pretty well masked. Medium body with a dry and slightly warm finish. Pretty rich sweetness. Probably a one and done beer for me but fun to try.

Bottle. The beer is a medium amber gold color. It looks to have just a tiny touch of haze. The liquid appears heavy in the glass. Significant legs. White head, fairly fizzy, dies away after puffing up. Lots of booze in the aroma. Plenty of vanilla, moderate cinnamon, definite rice flavor. Solid malt sweetness. Unfortunately, the booze kinda takes over and ends up dominating the beer. In particular, it makes the vanilla kinda messy, like taking a big whiff straight from a vanilla extract bottle. The taste is sweet and hot. The horchata flavors come through, but there’s nothing to balance out the heat. It’s actually fairly creamy, but it just can’t balance the scales. Full, rich mouthfeel, fairly oily. Lots of alcohol in the finish. As much as I don’t like this beer, I think it’s actually not that far away from being really tasty. It feels like a mess that could click with some relatively minor tweaks. I’m just not sure what that would be.

Poured from bottle thanks AdamChandler for the Ratebeer Camp extravaganza. Pours dark orange one finger head. Aromas of vanilla rice cinnamon and booze. Tastes like vanilla extract or a bad version of cough medicine. Yikes.

750 ml bottle thanks to AdamC. Side-by-side with the regular version. The color is slightly dark with the aroma being mostly sugar, sugar in a glass. Truly, I only smell sugar.,

The flavor is overly sweet. Not as subtle or pleasant as the standard version. I get a huge artificial, sweetness like saccharine. And aspirin like hints. Wow... This is not very drinkable at all.
