In 2014 the distinct dutch beerstyle ‘Kuitbier’ was reborn. It is characterized by the use of large amounts of oat malt. We brewed it according to the style guidelines, but added some Saaz dry hops after fermentation with lager yeast.

Bottle from Mitra Druten. Hazy yellow coloured. Wheat, yeast, citrus, bubblegum, and lots of carbonation, I guess to emulate the shampoo sensation. Creative, but otherwise not very well done.

Hazy yellow colour with big fluffy head. Very gassy. A difficult pour. Aroma is dominated by the yeast which has lots of fruitiness. Flavour is floral, herbal, bready and has some weird fruity esters. Strawberry bubblegum?

Oatmeal beer with spices and dry-hopped with Saaz - so everything but truly ’traditional’ in the historical sense, I reckon... Very fierce gusher, I lost 1/4 of the bottle in spite of opening it very carefully over the sink - beer kept flowing out the bottle neck but after having captured it, I got a very coarse and irregular, off-white, bubbly, ’ugly’, tightly cobweb-lacing but otherwise stable head on top of a hazy straw blonde beer with greenish hue. Aroma of banana peel, fresh lime juice, lemon-scented hand soap, butter, ripe pear, lots of ’real’ pineapple, camomile tea, minerals, sweetbread, honey, watermelon, lavender, melting powder sugar on a hot pancake, stewed pear, sweet gherkin, cinnamon, sweet curry powder, Thai basil, starfruit. Vividly fruity onset, impressions of sweet banana (isoamylacetate) and canned pineapple along with softly sourish ripe starfruit and a vague hint of lime, but everything is - unsurprisingly - blotted out by fierce overcarbonation, adding sourishness and a ton of minerally flavors as well as numbing the tip of the tongue; lots of wheaty soapiness ensues (very witbier-like), adding the soft, silky mouthfeel and subtly grainy flavor associated with oats on top of a light ’white’ bready barley background. Finish is ethereally spicy, including soapy coriander and something vaguely lemongrass-like, soapiness goes on till the very end and a dash of spicy hops add some much needed dryness, as well as retronasal floral aspects, but both in a subtle, gentle manner. Soapiness lingers. These guys tend to know very well what they are doing and connecting the typical soapy qualities of wheat combined with oatmeal to ’shampoo’ is at least a very clever find - as are the names of pretty much all their other beers. The violent gushing is obviously an issue and technical perfection is much more a basic thing for me than pure flavor concerns, but other than that, I can appreciate this beer for its sense of irony: I almost get the feeling that this beer is conceived to ironically emphasise the soapiness of classic Belgian witbier. Not an uninteresting beer, but obviously the gushing is a problem and Oedipus has done more impressive things in past years.
